Soon to get an 88 GXL...few questions

I went and looked at an 88 Rx-7 GXL today. It has the stock motor in it with 146k miles on it and it was swapped from a auto to 5 speed. body is in decent shape, but has a few small surface rust spots. the interior is in fair condition. he said the clutch and slave cylinder has about 1k miles on it. it has an aftermarket intake. It also has a fuel cut off switch inside and a cold start assist switch. He said these motors are prone to flood out and thats what the fuel switch is for and he said the cold start assist is to help out when first starting it for the day. I am new to these cars and know nothing about them. I drove it and it seems to run good. Third gear grinds a little but other than that i didnt see any major problems. also when it was idling it sometimes had a little shake. like a miss or something, but it never died. If i get it i will be trading my 94 eagle talon TSI AWD for it that is currently a shell with a rebuilt motor to go in it. I have about 2500 in my talon. do you all think this would be a fair trade or should i try to get any boot with the deal? any advice will be greatly appreciated. thanks

well, the flooding can be caused by two things. first may be low compression. second may be leaking injectors. you need to run a compression test before purchasing the car. the cold start assist you describe is a new one to me... the only cold start that was listed was the sub zero starting assist. this was a factory setup where when the outside temperature was below freezing, a mixture of 90%water and 10% antifreeze would be injected into the intake manifold. pretty neat idea if you ask me. unfortunatly most people scrap the setup anyways. make sure you thoroughly read through the FAQ in the 2nd gen section and download a copy of the fsm (available in the FAQ).

They guy who had it before him which just so happens to be his friend did the automatic to 5 speed swap so theres no telling what else has been done.

Im just gonna stick with my talon. I know nothing about these motors and this car has alot of rigging done to it so I would be really lost. I am familiar with my talon and it will be worth more when I get it running than this rx7. Plus my talon is turbo all wheel drive. Thanks for all of your help. This site is great. I would have probably traded until i read the " what to look for when buying an rx7"

Well, That loop is a brake line. Friends didn't have the right tools to cut it down so left it whole and looped it. The cold start assist is the sub zero system. I used it as a way to inject oil or atf in the rotary housing if the motor decides to floods. Easier than pulling spark plugs and putting it through the holes. Sorry about the cone filter. The stock intake box was cracked and letting dust get in the motor. didn't want the housings to get scorn so the cone went on. Other than that I think that is about it. Any other questions I will be happy to answer. Sorry for the thread hijack also. Just justifying what I did or friends have done to the car.

If the corolla doesn't come through I'm prolly going to keep it. It helps keep the insurance down by 60 dollars. next year i can sell it. Thanks SDRotary-fc. I'll check those bushings out
