Some power steering pump questions... a little long

I have an 89 GXL that I need a power steeing pump for. I know there are 2 types of pumps, the type that came on the GTU with one line that comes into the top from the rack... the engine speed variable pump... and the one that came on the GXL with 2 lines that come in at the top... the vehicle speed sensitive pumps... have a been misinformed or am I on the right track so far? Now here's where my questions come in. I believe the car came with an s4 pump in the pile of parts in the hatch... it had the 6 wire pig tail and a 2 wire pigtail for the sensors...but that won't connect with the s5 harness.. so my question is there anything different about the pumps from s4 to s5 other than the sensor wiring? For example if I just get the correct sensor that will allow the pump to connect to my s5 wiring harness will it work.. or will the p/s computer not sync with the pump? My other question is are all the vehical speed sensing pumps the same for the s5 series... say I get a pump from a 90 GXL or 91 coupe, maybe even a convert... will it be any different from the pump that should be in my 89? I need to know becuase I already have 2 pumps that won't work in my car.. I don't want to get a third one that won't work.

A 90 GXL or 91 non turbo coupes didn't come vehicle speed sensing steering, but rather engine speed sensing steering.

Only the 86-89 GXL, 88-89 convertible, 88 GTU, 87 Sports, and all Turbos (that had power steering) came with vehicle speed sensing steering.

Thanks for the info... do you know if the wiring was different between the s4 and s5 series?

I don't know. I imagine the plugs are, but I can't say for sure

I guess I'll just splice the wires together and see if it works..

you should be able to swap them, i had a s4 and i think it was a non speed sensing replacement off ebay and switched into 88 gxl with no problem, it just went into overboost mode, like when parking all the time. lasted for about 60,000 miles just fine, would have lasted longer, but car was wrecked. i dont know if that help you at all. i wish i could remember more, but that was about three years ago.
