some idle and timing questions

Hey I just read in another thread that some people purposely raise their idle to the 1k range because they have removed their emmissions. I dont understand this, if its acurate please someone explain it.

Also I read in my haynes manual that in order to set my timing i need to have my idle at 750. My idle bounces between 1000-1200 whenever ive tried to lower it it sounds like its gonna die. My car is missing badly, what would be the ill effects of setting my timing at a bit higher idle?

It sounds like they are trying to cover up some kinda problem with the car / engine...

If there are no problems, removing the emissions doesn't change any reason why the engine can't idle at stock RPM's.

Higher RPM's means more advanced ignition timing.
Having it bounce around like that will only cause the ignition timing to bounce all over the place...
