some diff. mount questions. need advice quick

ok im in the middle of replacing my diff mount and i got some questions:

i have the old one out, but it doesnt look any differrent than the new one going in. both look to have the rubber block with the 2 studs fully intackt. how can i tell that the old one was broken? was it?

what the heck is that mettal block for that hangs off the front of it? i cant figure out what on earth that thing does and im tempted to take it off the new before installation. someone please enligten me?????

so lets assume the old diff mount was ok? what else could give blown diff mount symptoms (clunking on acceleration and throttle lift)? EVERY bolt on the subframe and diff was tight (and rusted, grrrr) and there was no vissible slack anwhere in the assembly when i droped it to switch the mounts. is there something i could be missing thats causing the problems besides the diff mount?

thanks

Check the metal portion of the mount. Thats the part that usually breaks.

The block hanging off the front is a vibration dampener.

As for the clunking... did you check the diff housing bushings? I had all the syptoms of a broken diff mount but when I dropped the subframe I found it intact. It was actually one of the diff housing bushings.

I believe Kevin Landers gave a good way to test the diff mount.

Cruise in first gear to about 10mph and let off the gas and repeat. If you hear a clunk sound its the diff mount. Something to that effect.

It's *usually* the diff mount. If it's not the diff mount then it's probably the diff housing mounts.
