solenoid and starter question... Please Help!!

If the solenoid on my starter went would it smell like it was burning out the last few starts before it went? My car is just clicking when I start it and it won't start. I know it is not the battery but I just want to make sure that it is the starter before I actually replace it. The last few times I drove my car before it stopped starting I did smell a strange smell. Also it does start if I popstart it.

Thanks

Frankly speaking, my 87na is doing the click thing for the last month or so. I'll turn the key, click. Let go, turn the key, click, let go . Sometimes the car starts right up. Others I do the click three or four times and it will start. Have not the time to fix it. Got other things to do. When and if it won't start I'll just get under and either hit the sucker with a hammer or get some exercise pushing. Never had a starter solenoid smell. Just click, not click. Usually hit it with a hammer once or twice and start it up. Order a new one. I'd make sure that it was the starter solenoid doing the clicking first. Could be your hearing a relay click. Make sure the small wire on the starter gets voltage when the key is turned to start.

Unhappy Same problem here too

One day my starter just suddenly didnt move at all and there was no clicking noises from my solenoid. The first time I thought I just didnt turn the key all the way or something so i just turn the key again and the engine turns over and starts right up. But then i got curious when i got home, and tried to start it up again but it just sat there silent. all accessories work and all fuses are fine. I can hear what i think is the fuel pump behind me and the weird thing is if i leave my key in the on position a buzzer goes off, a loud one which sounds just like the red line warning buzzer. It also comes from my cluster which just makes me think its coming from the tach. the only problem i had earlier with my tachometer suddenly didnt work sometimes, right on start up it would reach about 2k to 3k(gas pressed down) and then the tach would just die, this started to happen about 3 days before it died. and never move until the next time i would start it up. any ideas whats wrong i dont mind the tach i can shift from memory, just need her to start up cuz its my commuter to school.

try hitting ther starter with something n then try starting it. If it starts after doing that its the starter. The only hard part is that the starter cant be seen from the engine bay. Youll have to jack the car up to get to it. Its under the car on the driverside. Just try tapping it a hammer and then try startin it.

So I should try?

Hitting the starter with a hammer?!! Its that really ok? how hard should I hit it? and where on the starter would be most effective? Ive gone under my car and found the negative ground loose on the starter so i cleaned it off and tightened it to no avail. Im going to check my grounds because thats what alot other other threads say to do. I guess washing the engine bay could have worked some gunk into the grounds or something i guess. Last thing, I get no clicking noise from the solenoid what so ever, just one light click from the dash somewhere when i turn the key. Just like the guy in post number two.
