Soft Material Coating on triangle rotors

Ok, let me try this again. I some responces when I tried to ask this question before but nothing that was related to the rotors inside your engine. Well here it goes again. The soft material coating on the rotors as mentioned in the FSM in the engine section, cleaning. It said dont damage the soft material coating on the rotor sides. Now I noticed some of my rotors have less of this coating the some of my others... (I have plenty to compare to ) anyways. I was wondering what the primary use of this is for and how critical it is to have much of it on the side of the rotors? Also is there a measurement to check against a tolerance?

what series rotors?

Some use chrome plating for heat control, and to help balance the weight of the rotor.

Chrome is very soft and would be discolored over time and use.

the coating on rotor is mostly for heat, friction, and rust protection

No the coating on the rotor itself. here is a crappy pic I found on google and I made an outline of where I'm talking about. The yellow lines point to it and the black lines outline where its at.

My second question is how adversely will it affect performance, life of enigne, etc it parts of it are worn more than others?

I forget where it is but it does somethng like prevent wear or help combustion. I can;t remember.

the coating is a teflon like material that is on both sides of the rotor (like gear side). it is not nessasary to be concerned about it. i have rebuilt many engines and i usually clean it all off with a wire brush because most of it is gone anyway. it's really doesn't do much because that part off the rotor should not be touching the side housings. the only things that shoud touch the side housings are the corner seals, side seals, (sides of apex seals), and the oil seals.

Thats what I was thinking they were for. I didnt think that they would be used unless a seal failed and it was to be like a buffer to prevent massive damage to the rotor and housings. Thanks for the help.
