So it seems Im not burning oil, OMP failure???

So Its been about 2200mi since I last had my oil change. I went out to add some oil to the car since Im driving 400 miles tomorrow. I checked the dipstick level and it appears to not have moved since I did the oil change.

I have new OMP lines and they appear to be empty with no oil. Now I know the S5 OMP is electric, so it injects when it determines.

My question is, if the OMP was not working, and not injecting oil, would I know?

I was always under the impression that if the OMP failed you would go into limp mode and definitely know. Is it possible that it can fail but not force the car into limp mode? I have noticed no loss of performance in the motor.

I think I will add some premix in tomorrow before I start off just to be sure.

You should have noticed some oil movement in the engine by now. Did you overfill the oil originally? If so it could just be geting down to where it should be by this point (it would have had to be fairly overfilled for this).

Usually, the ECU will detect some kind of incorrect reading throught the OMP circut and realise that something is wrong and illuminate the check engine light; and in the case of the OMP it will also put the car in limp mode.

I'm sure there are cases where the OMP has failed without the ECU noticing. No failsafe is perfect. For your trip, definitely use premix in your fuel at a 100:1 mix ratio and continue to use that untill you can confirm that your OMP is working again.

ive seen enough fuel blowby to compensate for the oil level lost due to the OMP.

what does your oil smell like?

If someone rebuilt the engine and did not use a gasket for the front cover, but used RTV instead, it's possible the RTV is blocking the oil passage from the front side housing to the front cover.

Or can't you take a 10mm size wrench and loosen one of the four injector lines at the OMP, then go for a ride for a quarter hour or more, then look to see if oil has been coming out of that loosened line? Yes.

I have too. That and overfilling a little can make it seem like it isn't losing any. Definitely pre-mix while you figure it out. Haynes and the FSM both have the OMP test in them.

OP: Did you notice the same thing before the oil change? Maybe you just added too much oil when you did your oil change. For now you could just premix 1 oz of 2 stroke oil per gallon of gas every fill up, just in case, to make sure you have lubrication. Then keep checking the oil level over the next 2000 miles.

There's also a procedure to test the OMP in the Haynes manual and I'll bet in the factory service manual (FSM) too, which you can download from a link in the FAQ.
