what grade of gas? premix? n0s? hotter flames are more blue than orange. green flames come from burning something like potassium or ammonium. could just be some kind of residue burning in the exhaust system.

I know the sound my backfires make is varied, so I'd immagine the flames would be too. An orange or yellow flame would be cooler and longer burning, indicating a richer mixture. That would be accompanied by a softer sounding backfire, more of a WOMPH sort of sound. A blue or white flame indicates a hotter fire and a leaner mix, making it burn faster. That'd be accompanied by a CRACK sort of backfire.
I've seen green flames from burning things like cereal boxes on a campfire, the ink makes it burn green. Maybe the freind who told you of the colours is slightly colour blind?
That's my educated guess anyway.
