I used to have one of those that screwed into your carpet. I had it mounted behind the center console on that hump. Worked great for the most part...but the occasional overfilled drink will spill down onto the sides

I've used this for years! It's the best!

if I don't have a passenger I usually just jam the cup in between the passenger seat and the center console.. it's a snug fit and works with most cups.

I got a bundle of rags and tucked them into a circle on my passenger seat to hold my drinks, works well. In my old truck, I used to use a roll of duct tape. Cans fit perfectly in the center and the weight of the tape keeps it from falling over. It is a non-permanent option.

so no feedback on my original idea at all. just a bunch of people saying the same things that everyone says in every cup holder related thread. wow.

In the picture in my very first post. in the center console vents. in case everyone thought i was just putting that picture there for fun.

I've got one of these in all four of my rx7's

This is the best one I've found for our RX7's 1st or 2nd gen. The flap tucks under the shifter bezel and hangs down on the passenger side perfectly. Better than the tuck in between the seat and console as it doesn't interfere with a passenger sitting in his/her seat.

In the attached thumbnail you can't see the cup holder itself, but you can see where the flap tucks under the bezel. It's called a Cup n Stuff and you can still get them on Amazon for $3 each. Come in different colors, but the Grey one seems to be the most available. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_au...ds=cup-n-stuff

These can hold most any size cup. The problem with the ones in the OP's picture is it will pretty much only hold a can. The idea they being in the cool breeze of the AC is a plus though.

plus I'm willing to sacrifice a small amount of usefulness to keep it stock looking.

i have the same goal there... but the other thing i wanted to do was to remove the arm rest and try to custom mold a cup holder there. the room to do it is inefficient... its too small... more to say, shallow. i took it apart to fix some broken plastic with gorilla glue and found you can take the arm rest off and maybe replace something there. but like i said, it seems too shallow to put anything there unless you dont need that little storage. as for now i am using that cup holder like the others.

it's nice what you did with the vents, cause it also doubles as a drink cooler/warmer =D
i'd do it cause i have no vents and a big gaping hole looks gay

Did you ever figure these out? Either where they came from or where to find something similar that works?

Its weird I just went through a drive thru for the first time in the rx7 today for lunch and had no where to put my drink! I think I'm going to pull out the center panel where the power side mirror switch is and put a new piece in with a cup holder I'll let you guys know how that works out

As an owner of a '00 A6, I can tell you that those cupholders will last about as long as anything else on an Rx7. Meaning it's going to break soon. I've already replaced both of mine. But, they will probably do the trick, seeing as they're small and will collapse when pushed in. Hell, anything's better than nothing, I suppose.

I wouldn't put them in the spot for the dash vents though. I'd put then under the radio If I were you.

Another type of pop-out cupholder that I'd have considered was a 1st gen Tiburon. It has 2 spots, and is also just as small and collapsible, but I've never had any problems with mine for the number of years I owned it.
