Smoking out the taillights of an 88?

Smoking out the taillights of an 88?
has anyone done this before? I was thinking of [ainting them all black and then it would match the rubber stuff that goes around the car. any ideas?

Would you be using that stuff that's specially made to darken tail lights? I think my car may have had that applied to it, and I think my MX-6 did too...my tails are darker than everyone else's.
