smokes until warmed up

hey guys, im a little confused here. i got my car about 6 weeks ago. for some reason when i start it up it smokes like crazy. but when it gets warmed up the smoke stops. iv heard many suggestions from people i know. like clogged cat and blown oil seals. i dont think its a clogged cat, tho it could be, i duno. i dont think it would be blown oil seals either, cause if it was blown oil seals it would smoke all the time ,even when its warmed up (correct me if im wrong on this). iv tried thickening up my oil with 20-w50 + a bunch of stp stop smoke. but that doesnt really help at all, other than it doesnt leak nemore. if any of you guys have ideas id be more than happy to hear them.

I alwas though it was normal to smoke a bit on a cold startup.
Can you give us a bit more info? like on the type of smoke, is it coolant or oil smoke?

i have an 88gxl 127k i have alittle fuel smoke on start up thats about it. It would smoke when i stay in first or second at over 6k smoke was so bad i thought i blew the motor..anyway soon as i let up the smoke stopped as fast as it came. so i put some 20-50w redline oil in and ever since then no problems.. Marval mistery oil should do the same thing

Hey, I have nearly 280,000 miles on the wifes car, Non Turbo 87. Yours is just broke in good. If it dosn`t smell like oil it`s coolant. How is your coolant level? Mine smokes a little in the morning, or more if I do not drive it for a few days but it cleans right out.

Is the engine rebuilt? I've seen a little over 200k, but 280k seems impossible for a rotary.

ok....check this out.....when the coolant seal breaks or cracks it contracts, when it is cold it allows coolant to seep into the chamber which then burns when the car is turned on.....once the car is warm, or seal warms up, the seal expands and does not allow the coolant to seep into the chamber until it cools and contracts again......it will continue unti the seal is completely deteriorated and then you have to tear the engine apart to get to the seals at which point ppl opt to rebuild the whole thing....
