Unhappy Smoke from Behind the turbo

So I kept having this coolant leak and finally figured out that I it was the rubber seals between the LIM and the block. I Tore all the way down and replaced it, put everything back together and its still leaking.

I'm really pissed that I have too go all the way back down there, does anyone have any advice on what I'm doing wrong and why it wont stop leaking?

I can't remove the LIM and leave the turbo in place can I?

Thanks in Advance

Stefan

Hmm Did you use new seals and were they seated correctly when you mated the two surfaces? Those things are not always very cooperative.

I would use a little RTV to hold them in place.

no you have to remove the turbo to get at the lim .. are you talking about the o rings between the block and the lim if so make sure you clean out the mating surface first and use a little vaseline to keep them in place I had the same problem ... but if it is leaking there it usually pools on the block ... it sounds like you might be leaking out of the coolant feed onto the hot side of the turbo

Well if it was one of the turbo lines I would easily see it. Both lines are very visible. At first just smelt like burning rubber, then it looked like smoke but white. I got under the car and I could see water coming from the LIM. Im assuming that the rubber o ring moved. I dunno what the smell if is from for the life of me though..

Did you thoroughly clean the o ring grooves before replacing the o rings?

Outer water jacket failure? I hope not, hopefully that seal just didn't sit right. I feel your pain man, removing the turbo is a bitch.

Is the water hitting the turbo and steaming off? Seems odd since the o-rings are lower then the turbo if I recall correctly.

when you pulled the turbo and the lim the first time you prob bent the mating surface of the of the coolant feed line and it is leaking a bit and falling onto the hotside of the turbo creating steam it happened to me when I replaced those o rings plus those oring create a puddle on top of the block and unless it is leaking a hell of a lot i doubt it would make it back to the exhaust to create steam
