Smoke after a running in hot weather
Heya guys, just yesterday sitting at the lights i noticed a wee bit of smoke coming
out of the bonnet so i pulled over to have a look, the slight smoke is actually a burning oil smell and was coming from the under the turbine housing? Its never done this before in the past so i have no idea why its doin it now. The only thing i can think of is i just had the turbo taken out cos it had a exhaust leak from the front pipe, could they of possibly forgot to tighten something? Like the oil feed line or something? Also it only does this in hot days without me giving it **** too.
btw its a HT18-2S

Probably some oil blow by. Nothing to worry about if it goes away unless it's constantly smoking or smoking on boost. What oil weight are you using? When the turbo oil seal goes bad, it will smoke whenever you decel. Already been there.

Um,... the smoke is actually coming from the engine bay, i lift up the bonnet and theres smoke coming from under the turbine housing (very slight smoke) it looks as if i got a little oil leak somewhere near there?

You know that there's an oil inlet/out pipes at the housing. There could be oil seaping out from there. Try removing the turbo inlet duct to see if there's any oil in there. If not, probably just oil seaping out.

Found the culprit! slight oil leak from one of the 6 bolts on the turbine housing.
The pics taken from underneath the turbo, please dont tell me the turbos stuffed cos i had it reconditioned 2 months ago, is it possible to just tighten it up?

It looks like the oil is coming from the oil drain line. The area around the gasket is wet. I think you should replace that gasket. *IF* the oil is leaking from that area, you would see smoke out of the tail pipes. The only way you can tell is to remove the turbo and inspect the rear oil seal and see if there is oil in the turbine area. Looking at the picture again, it looks like it's coming from the turbine. Rear oil seal is an easy fix but getting to it is another story.

Thanks for the replys guys, at first i thought it must be the oil outlet pipe, bu looking at it closely the pipe doesnt even touch the bolts so how on earth will it get on there? How does oil just leap from the outlet pipe and go on the bolts? Unless whilst driving it blows back on it? This doesnt mean a rebuild does it?

There is a "ring" that before the turbine. That is what you need to replace. If there are no oil in the compressor area and not a large amount of shaft play , you're ok. Those rear oil seals can fail if you stretch out the seal too much when you install it. It looks like a ring actually. Very easy to replace.

You get the idea. Sometimes it's stretched out too much and doesn't seal since it's not elastic (of course it isn't) it's metal (don't know what type of metal).
