smoke after quarter tank???
k my 7 ran fine (86 s4) right untill it hits quarter tank, so i thought my motor needed a rebuild. The other day my friend gave me a gas card for christmas and i topped it of. I relined it for a sec NO SMOKE??? wtf should i buy a new fuel pump? this problem has been going on for a while (by the way) i never let it get below a quarter. what should i do? 140,000 shouldnt run for much longer. junpower can rebuild it cheap? go for rebuild or search for the problem??? any ideas??? same fuel filter and pump since i got it. previous owner had it parked for almost 6 months

so it only gets bad after a quarter tank is left? to me, it seems like your fuel is bad. remove the fuel pump and look at the condition of the gas inside. if it is full of deposits and impurities, remove the gas.

lol 140k wont run much longer, Ive had a bunch of 7s with over 190k on the clock that were just fine. Dont worry so much.
Like wade said pull the pump out of the tank and see whats in there, You may have gotten some bad fuel and have some deposits in the fuel at the same station all the time?

They say that because they constantly worry, and dont drive there cars. It is a good idea to always have money set aside though, not just for a rebuild but w/e may happen, you know like your dog gets sick or something, anything not covered by your insurance.
Its going to be something in your fuel system if it only smokes at a quarter of a tank. The chevron you go to, how often do they fill there tanks at the station, 1-2times a week, more or less. And how old is the station. Try a station that is newer, or one that less refills. If there tanks are being filled alot t dosnt leave anytime for the **** in the tank to settle to the bottom and it will be sucked up and put into your tank.

sounds like you shouldn't worry. its winter and theres alot of condensation etc. the fact that it smokes only at 1/4 seems very odd to me. a bad engine doesn't "know" when to smoke haha it just does it whenever wherever.

I have a 88 TII that does the same thing. I drained the tank twice and have raan more sea foam than most people have bought in a lifetime.
Could it have anyting to do with a weak fuel pump?

yeah, there is a possibility that its condensation. but honestly, the only thing you can REALLY do at this point is just keep it more full then 1/4 tank and keep an eye on it. things happen to my car that just go away mysteriously. its weird. but i mean if there is no FOR SURE fix then there is nothing that your going to be able to do...unless you feel like spending ALOT of money all at once. just keep an eye on it, see what it does, record the symptoms and get back to us.
