Slow rev in gear...?

Ok...I've been driving my cousin's fiance's 88 RX7 around and at idle, it revs fearlessly and free. In 1st and 2nd it's ok but in 3rd gear it takes a long time to get to redline at full throttle. Same thing with 4th and 5th. I'm not sure if it's the gearing or what, but the motor doesn't seem responsive in those gears. Maybe the motor is tired...it's got 125k miles on it. It needs to warm up before driving otherwise it sputters. Any advice? I recently tuned it, new plugs, wires, all fluids changed and flushed, filters, etc. We're just wondering why it takes a long time to get to redline in the last 3 gears

It sputters when it is not warm? That is kind of odd, is this what would happen if the cold start system wasent working? Anyone?
