Its not rice its JSpec, in japan and europe cars usually have 1 wiper. It looks really nice if its done right. It has been done, i have seen it in sigs. Most of the people in this forum should jump to do this since it lightens your car and you still get the ability to use the wiper on the car. Uniqueness is not 'rice'. If rx7 owners would get a clue and stop calling everything that is done to the car that makes it look better or adds some functionality 'rice' then maybe they would win some car show awards. I think people here call things 'rice' b/c one person did it now everyone has to be 'cool' and do it.

No they don't. The only cars with one wipers are Mercedes, but their wiper is a funky hydro-mechanical unit that cleans the whole windshield.

All BMW's, RX-7s, Skylines that I've EVER seen in person or in magazines have TWO wipers.

Fiction tastes better coming out of a book.

JSpec??? Functionality?? If it takes a wiper conversion to win car shows I'd have to question the car shows you're entering my friend. One wiper serves absolutely no purpose except to follow a trend set by others. BTW, last I checked The RX-7s in Japan had 2 wiperblades. JSpec hehe.

seriously dude, its your car. You should do whatever makes you happy. If that means 1 wiper, altezzas, and stickers all over your exterior go for it. Ultimately is how you feel about your car that matters. Just don't come on the board preaching about fake benefits. Say you do it because you like it, not because it has functionality or will help you win a show.

In support for an arguement of function over appearance, the .5-2lb loss by converting to a single wiper isn't worth it. It's almost like saying, wear sneakers not boots when you drive, you'll go faster due to the heavier boots.

But to do it, normally you take out both wiper arm. The second arm you get a larger blade on the remaining arm, and bolt it on so that the path of the single wiper covers most of the windshield. Only problem is, it will never sit completely at the bottom, so you have a huge wiper in your field of vision.

If there is no real performance to be gained, if anything, you'll wipe away rain slower, why do it?

Ya I guess since I have carbon fiber wipers, if I took one off plus the wiper arm I would probably lose around 1/4 of a pound.....but if you have only 1 wiper, don't you have to make it a bit longer....so you lighten your car by a couple ounces.

we should just remove the whole windsheid so we can remove both wipers. just think how much weight you would save over just having a pair of goggles instead

There were more cars than just the Mercedes to use single wipers. The first gen VW Scirocco had a single wiper, as did the first Isuzu Impulse (not coincidentally designed by the same person, Guigiaro). There have been others.

If you do it right, you can have the single wiper and not have the rice-look. I did it to my '86 long before the V8 conversion as a way of getting one more distraction out of in front of me on the autocross course (on my 911s, with fairly central mounted wipers, you could just switch them to park on the other side, out of the way).

To do this, you must use the connecting bar between the passenger side wiper and driver's side to add material to the bar from the wiper motor and the passenger side wiper (which is pretty much centrally mounted. On Japanese cars, the wipers mount on the opposite sides. You can see the mounting for the wiper motor on the drivers side of your car and the spot on the far passenger side for what would be the Japanese driver's wiper mount). By lengthening the arm from the motor to the wiper, and resetting the wiper, it will wipe the entire window and park out of out of sight on the passenger side (I made mine park a bit high to uncover the licence plate in the window.)

Personally, I like the look of one wiper in the rain, but I don't like the vetical parked touring car look or the look of one that's just been moved on it's mount to cover the driver and park diagonally up the windshield, ricer-style.

The original Isuzu Impluse was designed by Guigiaro to be the replacement/update for the Scirocco. Some reason VW didn't want the design so Isuzu bought it and manufactured it.

Off topic, but...

Giugiaro made four "Ace of..." cars. The first for Karmann (the first gen Scirocco), which was the Ace of Spades, the second also for Karmann(Ace of Diamonds, a BMW project), the third for Isuzu. They were commissioned by the companies. The design for the Impulse was the Ace of Clubs, and was NOT originally made for VW. Giugiaro had already designed the Impulse's predecessor, the Isuzu 117 Coupe, while working at Bertone, and they asked him to also design its replacement. Giugiaro does NOT shop his designs around like you imply. They are done as commissions for the manufacturer. The Impulse/Piazza came out in '79, three years before the Scirocco changed from the original Karmann/Giugiaro design to the Herbert Shafer designed 2nd gen Scirocco (which had many design elements of the Karmann BMW Ace showcar).

Ok, now, back to our topic, already in progress...

All the lightening ideas, you all should go for it.

This does not look good?? lol it does not ADD functionallity it does the same w/ less parts, kinda like DOHC as opposed to Pushrod motors.

And for the shows, trends are the way to go buddy. Hate to break it to you but if you lighten your car, guess what, its a trend set long ago.

Its more than .5lbs, take wiper + arm + steel rod to run 2nd wiper = more than .5lb
You all take off everything else imaginable(sp) so why would this be any different??
As for needing a longer blade... we already have 20" blades they don't need to be longer.
if you set it right it is not in your feild of vision, and it takes rain away as fast if not faster, thing about it no drag = faster motion, and its only in the area that counts.

Look like you all need to try something before you critisize(sp) it.
And as for people that don't like it, you all just said 'i don't like it', er something like that.

Ill post pics of mine after my inspection. I have not done it yet due to this inspection.

ChrisV nice car.

ChrisV, when you say reset the arm, do you mean just moving the arm on the spline or doing something else?
You have a nice looking car, I think its a shame its still not a rotary though.

Hey AcmeSkater...I think you need to get your Information straight. Enlighten me a bit...what car does a single windshield wiper go on that sticks up high enough to block the driver's vision? I can think of NO JSpec cars here in Japan that have 1 windshield wiper. NONE. NADA. ZIP. ZILCH. I have however seen some "ricer" Japanese driving around with one windshield wiper....GAY

I know that some Mercedes-Benz's have them.

IMO...that whole single windshield wiper thing....GAY

If I had to put a single windshield wiper on my FD(or my 2 previous FC's) to win car shows...then I'm going to lose. How about I win without doing the whole "single windshield wiper conversion"
