side mount intercooler?

has anyone ever ran a side mount intercooler? I've got a friend with a DSM, he has upgraded is a MVKIV intercooler and is getting rid of his stock side mount. it is about 140 cubic inches of cooling compasity (sp). I looks almost as if it will fit right in under the headlight.

Does anyone know the stock cooling abiltiy a TII intercooler?
Anyone tried this?

i'm guessing the DSM one would be more efficient considering those cars stock run more boost than the FC. is this out of a 1st or 2nd gen DSM? i'm not sure what the 1st gens ran stock, but the 2nd's were at 13psi in stock form. and after a few mods they'd prob be hitting 16 on the stock turbo.

whats weird is i was wandering the junkyard 2 weeks back and glanced over at a chrlysler minivan that was totalled. in the engine bay i saw what looked exactly like a DSM intercooler! haha. it looked like the engine had been tore apart so it wasn't in any specific mounting spot. so maybe it was just placed there, hahahaha...but i was really confused!

2nc Gen DSM. it looks like it will fit, but i'm afraid that if i put it in its going to give me turbo lag from hell. If I had money to upgrade my turbo I might give her a try just for ***** and giggles, but if it truns out to be a cheap upgrade from stock, I'm for that too.

Things that make me want to try this:
1 the intercooler is lighter than ours
2 it has a duct that looks like i can make if feed from the brake duct
3 in theory better cooling
4. and hell, you can always weild 3 togeather to make a nice front mount

My friend has a turbo Dodge Caravan. "Gift" from the parents, you know. It is possible that I/C was meant to be there. On a more interesting subject, I saw Panspeeds FC used a huge I/C (looks like Isuzu NPR size) horizontally mounted at the stock upper radiator position. I don't know how the radaiator was mounted, but you can see from pics heavy mods have been done up front (tubbed front wheel wells!) So even w/ cutting up the front, they didn't go w/ frontmount I/C. Oh, and it was faster than RE Amemiya FC that had 20 more hp and front mount I/C-as well as faster than 900hp Skyline and NSXs!

do you means position the intercooler so the side at the front instead of dead centre? if so, this is exactly what i am doing, the intercooler takes up the left hand half of the front, making a new front nosecone to suit

i was thinking of mounting it under the passanger side headlight. this will leave my Rad. free from obstruction. I was going to enlarge the brake duct and route it to the intercooler and then back to the brake. I'm going to try and test fit it tomorow if its not freaking freezeing.

Exactly what i am doing

There is a nice hole behind the left hand headlight for the piping to come up thru aswell, i am simply adjusting the way my radiator mounts so sit more vertically and running the pipe to the intercooler between the radiator and the rad support panel

I am in the process of making a new nose panel which will provide lotsa air flow to the intercooler, with the intercooler on the side, it only restricts flow to the radiator about 20-30% it depends on how big the intercooler is, my core is 16" long and 12" tall

Hey thats pretty good, the only thing I would change is the mounting bracket location, they would be better on the end tank, as the core sees alot of expansions and contraction, and after awhile the tubes in the core will crack with the stresses of the mounts on the core. If thats 3 dsm cores though, I have to hit the wrecking yards ASAP..
I have yet to find any decent cores in the wreckers however, most are mangled from front end crashes.. I guess I could always use a couple of TII cores though..Max
