Talking Sick of being Turbo, Going NA

Well I am tired of being turbo, I am going to go NA for a while. It will be the regular 4 port turbo motor with s5 tii internals and a moderate streetport. I am hoping for 190 to 200 at the wheels which is still more than most stock t2's make. I can't wait for the flat torque curve of NA and the lack of lag. Plus there is no point burning up my current stock turbo for a week or two's worth of fun. I will let everyone know how everything goes once it is all said and done. . Watch out second Haltech powered NA on the way! not to mention it's also in CT with the first haha.

Car is: 87 White TurboII 90k miles, 0000 miles on the new engine going in.

Mods are:
Haltech E6X
Walbro 255lph Fuel Pump
MazdaSpeed diff and motor mounts
ACT 6 Puck Clutch
S5 TII Flywheel
S5 TII Tranny
S5 TII rotors and housings
Moderate Streetport
Stock Turbo primaries, tan top 550's
Taurus E-Fan
Custom Header
Stock Intake with Filter on TB

Why one week? I will still be faster than a good portion of the TII's on this board and I will even drop some weight off the car in the process. Seems like a win, win.

TII rotors? If you were going back to N/A why use TII rotors? Why not use the higher compression n/a rotors?

I don't see you getting 190 to 200 at the wheels with that setup, the lower compression rotors are really gonna hold you back.

yea you'll be crawlin back. You'll need the six ports if you want to get 200 to the wheels I think. Also aren't the TII tranny pieces alot stronger, thus heavier? would you lose HP through that more than the NA tranny?

Do more than a streetport please to justify that haltech

Yah that's another good question, why'd you go with 4 port irons? Stock vs. stock the n/a irons have more open port area overall, of course it depends how far you went with a streetport. But, of course, you can port the 6port too.

Well at least they aren't s4 turbo rotors 8.5 would be significantly worse than 9.0 when compared to the 9.4 and 9.7 na rotors.

Well first of all, I am working with what I have, secondly, it is my understanding that a properly ported 4port will outflow a ported 6port anyway.

That's true, but what makes you think you're going to hit 190 to 200 at the wheels with TII rotors? I mean, your mods don't seem that extensive.

Think of it this way, a stock s5 n/a has ~136 hp at the wheels. You have lower compression rotors so it's gonna be lower because of that, and gone with 4port irons instead of 6port so essentially (in stock form) have less port area overall. Again the extent of your streetport makes things different but a 6port can be ported just as much. Are there other mods you're not telling us? I just don't see how you're going to get 190 to 200 at the wheels, but if you do more power to you man!

The stock s5 TII only had ~170 at the wheels and you've taken the turbo out of there, this is just why I wonder how you came up with your number. Is there anything else you forgot to list? I'm curious.

That may be true, I haven't looked into that. And yes I understand you may only want to work with what you have, very understandable.

As far as outflowing, I am pretty sure overall if you take both the 6port and 4port to the max with porting they will be pretty similar in size. This is of course based on looking at pictures as I don't know exactly where the coolant passages are on the TII irons.

AFM is gone, as are all the vac racks and unecessary solenoids and such. The Haltech has cleared up a lot of the engine bay. The exhaust is 2.5, no other real mods I can think of. We will have to let the Dyno be the proving factor.

I don't want a stock S5 NA I am going with this because I haven't seen anyone else go na 4port with standalone on these forums and it will be interesting to see the results. If I don't like NA I have all the parts to go back, but I doubt I will change my mind quickly. Plus I like my car too much to trade it .

I would highly recommend putting some higher compression rotors in there. The engine will be gutless down low with large ports and lower compression then the stock NA block. Any power that you gained while doing your porting will disappear due to the compression difference.

Yeah I am aware of the negative aspects of the lower compression turbo parts, but it will still be a fun experiment to see what we can push out of them. People have so much doubt for something like this, but we all have to admit, none of us (well I think none of us) Have ever owned or dyno'ed a 4 port na engine that is completely comprised of turbo internals and running standalone. I said I was hoping/expecting 190-200 I didn't put it down as fact and if I am off some it will be okay. 160-180 is all t2's stock make at the wheels so anything in that range would be good enough and anything above that will be awesome.

Alas only time will tell, well time and dyno charts anyway.

--Fritz

EDIT: People think P-Ports and Bridgeports and 1/2 Bridges are the only way to make great power on an NA yet we have seen forum members produce dyno charts of stock port 6port cars hitting 180 at the wheels. STOCK PORTS. Now if someone can get that out of a car on stock ports, How does that make the people with 170hp Bridge's and Streetports look? Obviously the way we tune and the way we port makes a difference on the outcome of the power we make. I just want to prove as well, if a stockport 6p can make good power. Than a Street Ported 4 port can do the same, maybe not as easily due to lower compression but it can try.

^ get ready for a loud *** exhaust if u mean to duplicate that 180hp stock port engine, which *by the way* uses S5 NA 9.7 rotors with SIX port plates...........

But yeah, if u get 180 to the wheels, I think you will like it. NAs are always ready to go, even more so if the tach stays above 3k rpm.

I have no intentions of duplicating that engine, I am just saying we all have a great deal of doubt when it comes down to things we don't know or haven't experienced personally. Would you have believed 180whp was possible on stock ports if someone hadn't have proved it? Maybe but I am willing to bet you would have been DAMN skeptical. We will just have to wait and see the results.

I liked forced induction way to much to go to something like that. I remember driving my tII around for a while with a crap load more mods then that and still it was fast but the torque sucked on it! Now my engine wasn't ported so it may make a differance but I don't know man what was wrong with your turbo??? My turbo spools at 3k rpm witch isn't that bad and if you have the stock ic then its around 2.5k.

Turbo will spool plenty fast and I am sure I can net over 250 to the wheels, but why? What's the purpose when it will be overtaxed and fried in several weeks time. Besides NA will be a nice change of pace. The stock turbo just won't be able to keep up with my future goals of the car, and I have no intentions of destroying an otherwise working piece of machinery.

I envy you....maybe because you have a TII and are gonna go NA...or maybe because you are showing me hope for my NA.

Haha right on man! Turbo is cool, but I have ridden in an na that shames most stock TII's and truthfully, I think while the turbo is awesome the hype that surrounds it gets out of hand. The stocker is not going to be efficient for my final power goals and so I have no use for it. Plus where is the fun in a turbo that loses it's efficiency after 5 or 6k? Why even bother owning a rotary if I can't redline it knowing that I am still making power and I am not hurting the car. Forced Induction is cool, but I think it is also cool that one can make power NA, I also want to help with encouraging more NA guys to go Standalone without having to go FI. The two don't have to go hand in hand, and the NA benefits a great deal from it as well.

Maybe NA guys don't go standalone because they don't have the cash for it, but I think an even greater number of them see it as, why go standalone and not bother to go turbo, so many of us have had any Natural Aspiration, aspirations stomped out of us before we could even start to really consider it.

Viva La NA!!
