Shredding sound after a few seconds of idle? pls help

My 1987 T2 S4 had a coolant leak in the intake manifold (the gasket and O ring were burnt) in order to do this I took apart the intake manifold replaced the gasket/ring and then I thought hey why dont I port my wastegate while i'm at it? Took out turbo ported wastegate (doing this to connect up my RB exhaust) so put everything together, start up the car, sounds great, idle''s and all, but then I smelled gas big time and saw some dripping down fromt he bottom, so now I had a bad pulsation damper, went throught the hassle of that finally got it replaced, the turbo is already on and now I just had to put the intake manifold back together, which I did, however now I start up the car and its starts but after a few seconds I hear like a SHREDING SOUND!! or I dunno a loud thump and the car shuts off.

The exhaust is not on, only the downpipe and it is loud while idling, also there was a lot of smoke coming from the engine when it was first started then it seemed to go away and then back again, the smoke seemed to be coming primarily from something between the turbo and the engine, also if I stay on the gas while idling the car doesnt die, and one more thing, while the intake manifold was off, we dropped a little piece of plastic down it from one of the tips of an injector. Please help, my baby has been gone for like 3 months now.

O crap.

Lesson:
Always cover any open intakes.
If anything falls in, fish it out before cranking, or guess what..

It could possibly spit on through.
It's kind of a high stakes bet.
It all depends on how lucky you are.

Rotary engines are basically precision air pumps, not garbage disposers.

I'd look at it as an opportunity for a fresh rebuild with a yummy port job.

Unhappy

right, so truth be told the car is still standing, I put it back together and it was working fine but then took it apart again to replace two of the injectors, now the car doesnt idle. I really want to get it fixed, I do not think its the engine loosing power or anything, the car has plenty of compression (I checked) but I reinstalled something wrong and now it will not idle, I have to keep the car at around 3 rmp or else the car will die, sometimes it will come down to about 2 for 2 and a half seconds then die out, I have a feeling its something with the fuel or air coming in, something is missing, what i'd like to know is how can I narrow it down, what parts am I paying attention to and what am I looking for. Please help me get my bad boy back on the roads, its sick and tired of standing in the garage!!!

Or better yet I just need a plan, somewhere to start.
