Shortie Shifter

Hey guys!

Welp, I used the FAQ writeup to build up my custom short shifter. Its hard to mesasure the shifts, but I can rest my hand on the surround, and shift without lifting the bottom of my wrist from the surround. I absolultely love it.

The shfiter defiantely doesn't interfer with loading cds in the cd deck anymore.

I used the writeup to make the short leverage, and then chopped the actual lever part down.

I need to goto a upolstry shop and have a custom boot made up though. The boot got trashed in about a week, just far too much leather material for the shortnened heigth.

that's about retarded... you ever seen a Rally car shifter? they are longer, making it a faster throw and easier to get to, the short shifter applies to the THROW not the fu*king legth of the shifter itself

Fully aware actually. The shifter is raised by about half an inch, then the lever increased via adding a threaded rod to the opposite side. Weld the gullet ball on the threaded rod, and the threaded rod to the shifter, and you've raised the fulcrum.

Modify the tranny shifter mount by adding a 1/2" spacer and you've raised the pivot.

All I did after changing the the pivot was shorten the shifter physicaly via cutting the top, and threadding the remainder.

I'm not autocrossing, and I know physics quite well. Thanks.

that looks way to low. if you're doing spirited driving you should have both hands on the wheel. good short shifters are designed to remain at factory height yet yeild a shorter throw. Having it that low requires more hand travel to shift a gear.

I had a DC sports short throw in my Si back in the day and i hated it.. the basic laws of physics. smaller lever harder to shift. skunk2 solved that for me

You raise a good point there. There is some extra distance to the shifter. Its quite convienient for my dailer driver though.

After rasing the pivot, the shifter was surprisngly tall, however shifting was shortened noticebly. I just too k it a step further to customize it to what I wanted it for my daily driving to and from school/work.

Coincidentaly, I made this out of a spare shifter, at some point I may go back, but for the most part, the shifts feel firm, and driving is easier. Definately not a good track option though.

see, now that makes sense. as the car being a daily driver it's more unstandable of wanting the benefit of a shorter throw but not requiring the need of retaining the height that would be wanted while doing spirted sorts of driving

though i'd have to say many of the roads in the black hills would be driven above the posted speed limited as they twist around wanting the stock height with a shorter throw :P

Man, I drove an MR-2 that has a shifter about that size stock. I dont know about the generations of MR-2s, but I think it was a 92 or at least the body style of a 92.

Awesome, yeah I'll be going to Omaha the 3rd week in May. I'll probably try to get the Omaha Rx-7 Club to host a picnic when i head down there. Maybe we could meet up in Sioux Falls or Mitchell? If you wanted, you could run down to Omaha with me too. They've got a couple sick sleepers in Omaha.

Dailer Driver, I can shift without moving my hand, just a push from my fingers.

To be honest, following the FAQ made it a pita. I might consider making another.
