short throw shifter
i bought one from a friend of mine...now if u can do this urself it will be nice but if u cant then i suggest u buy one from a site....any way he went and got a s5 shifter cut it down and rethreaded it....the throw is definately shorter then what my stock shifter was and its got good weight to it....u got to cut the shifter down bout a inch or 2 and thread it and it comes out nice...
there is a write up on here somewhere on how to do it. it works
It is not as easy as cutting down the stick and re-threading it - this will not work as it does not change the fulcrum point on the gear shift

i found a thread that a miata short shifter will fit in the fc's and the throw on then is much shorter and the physical size is shorter

Okay, since you were unable to see this link at the top of the second gen section,
I`ll move it down where you CAN see it

I have this shifter installed since last friday everything works well and the writup is SUPURBE (yea Karak) . As for the rattle Its just a matter of removing a very small amount of metal with a file/grinder/dremal to stop it. Every shifter/car is unique.
My advice it buy this shifter kit and follow the writeup.
