You're really asking to get flamed here. Do you realize how many times this question has been addressed in this forum? Go with Mazdatrix....also try a search

Normally I would fight you about the mazdatix one but i could care less because we have gone over this a dozen times.

I also decided not to yell at you this time and just tell you.....the miata shortshifter is good because its basically a swap(i have this one so i know)....the mazdatrix needs a little work (or so ive been told)...there both good but it depends on preference

next time search before your family wont even be able to recognize you from how badly burnt you are from all the flaming...

there is nothing more to be said......my job is done here

*whoosh* (flys away)

I put the Mazdatrix one in my '87 N/A and it was just a matter of pulling the stock shifter out and putting the short shifter kit in. The Mazdatrix shifter also comes with a bushing, gasket and leaf spring kit, which you should replace anyway.

The only problem with putting a short shifter in is that it might rattle and that will require some additional effort to fix.

not to thread jack, but how could you tell if your existing shifter is in deed a short shifter.

Short shift

I have Mazda Racings' short shifter (qwick shift - not a spelling error, it is what they call it). It shortens your throw by 60%. I bought a Sparco **** for the top-and it is not quite heavy enough. I would look to get a **** with some serious weight to it. But really, really like the short shift kit.

Short shifters typically shorten shifter travel (throw) by up to 60%. Makes shifting more precise, but at the same time tightens it up significantly and makes shifting a bit harder. That's the reason you would want to get a shifter **** with some weight to it. I'm using a solid metal T-handle ****.

Under a true short shifter there is typically a metal spacer about 1/2-1" thick that sits in the shifter tower hole. If your shifter mechanism has it then its a short shifter. Shifter throw in a stock mechanism probably approaches 6". The short shifters cut this down to about 3".

Hope this helps

When I finished modifying the "Miata short throw" I got off eBay (and it took more work than I thought it would) the **** I chose was the same one used on the 240Z kit I had run previously.
It's a Nissan part (# 32865-35F00 "****-control") and is quite heavy, has the proper shift pattern embossed on it (but no Nissan logo or anything) and the thread is correct for a S5 (and Miata, obviously) lever.

Pictured here...
