A miata shifter is a shorter throw and they're cheap.

I recently bought a used Miata shifter on ebay for around 36 bucks. Not sure what year car it was from, it wasn't in the listing. When I first installed it, it would bind going across neutral, so I removed it, ground about 1/16th inch off the bottom ball and reinstalled it. Now it shifts perfectly and is a much shorter throw. Best bang for the buck this side of a Nitrous bottle!
