Remove your ****-*** rowboat oar of a stock shifter. Start a fire in a burn barrel. Insert said shifter into fire. Let fire burn until ashes. Remove two pieces of shifter (after cool, obviously).

Find a machine shop that's not too busy. Have them clean the remnants of the rubber crap and cut about an inch off the top of the bottom half of the shifter. Same for the bottom. Have them MIG the bottom to the top, leaving about 1-1/2" above the ball part so you can get the shifter cover (the small one) to fit properly. Have them turn down the threads to the point where the top half starts to widen.

Install new shortened shifter with new small shifter ball cover, new upper and lower bushings, new inner boots, stock outer boot (if not torn), and stock ****.

Parts: about $40

Labor: about $30

Result: a shifter to make a Miata owner jealous

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think that will shorten the throw of the shifter - so what's the point? A "shorter" shifter?

I work for a living, and have money in my bank account, I think I would rather order one from Mazdatrix, rather than the beat down, burn this, turn that.. rig this duck tape that .....

Just kidding of course if thats what you prefer, but I'd rather order the part than make it myself.....

peace

I personally have the M'trix short shifter (not installed) but does anyone know the difference between m'trix's shifter than the m'speed one???...
My friend RX729 has the M'trix one installed in his 87TII and the shift travel is really short. I like it alot!!!...

Think about it. If the **** of the shifter sits 1-1/2" lower than it used to, the **** itself does less traveling, therefore shorter throw. I can shift through all 5 gears while keeping my thumb on the e-brake handle.

Most aftermarket deals shorten the throw by moving the selector part (sits inside tranny) of the lever longer, so it moves more in relation to the ****. Either method works, just that mine was dirt cheap.

yeah but I wouldn't want the *** any lower. and by shorting the stick instead of changing the pivot point it takes a harder push to move it.

short shifters are gay short throw shifters are good.

You're gay!
Just kidding, I wonder what a short throw, short shifter would be like, chop an inch off the top of the mazdatrix short shifter ;-)
