Talking short shift for free

well i don't know how many people know this or have tried it. i tried it because i put in a new shift boot from researcher(thanks maciek it looks great). any way there is a small metal ring aprox. 1" in height underneath your shift ****, take that out and viola 1" shorter shift i realy like it it's how it should have come from the factory.

thanks
james

just removeing tha jam nut from under the shift **** is not going to give you a short shifter, just the feel of one. A real short shifter kit extends the pivot on the lower portion of the gear shift to make it longer, makeing less of a thow between gears. If you just want the feel cut the shifter and rethread it for the ****.

That piece is on the series 4 shifter *****. Series 5's don't have that. but I have cut about an inch off of mine so my momo shift **** would match up with the shifter boot. I know that a series 5 shifter will fit right into a series 4 even though they are shaped different along the shaft before the threads.

Yes this is very true. I am glad someone think that way. cutting or removeing the jam nut just isn't the same

Ditto on the real short shifters. A flick of the wrist and your off. Its worth the money.

well yes nothing can give the same feel as short shifter, but it does give better shift feel and it shortens the throw by cnaging the length of the throw. a short shifter will change the angle for shorter throw i just changed the height of the shift **** for a shorter throw. and yes it is shorter i can now shift into any forward gear without as much travel.

Hey, has anyone tried a miata shifter on an FC?

I had my brother's miata apart, and noticed they were very similar. I believe the transmission internals are identical to a NA FC as well...

The throw on a miata is much shorter, and a used miata shifter is like 15 bucks at a junk yard. The only thing you'd have to do is shim the bottom bushing to the required height, along with the little nub thing...
