Short Shift

Hey all,

I'd like to know if there was a short shift kit available for my car? i just picked it up a few days ago and really think that the throws are way too long!
internet ordering would be ideal if any of you guys know of a place to get it.
86' FC, non turbo.

Thanks

you could make one with the shifter you have in the car, thats what i did and people are amazed at how well it worked. it makes the throws about as short as a miata shift.

What you do is you pull your whole shifter out of the tranny and stick the bottom part in a vice. then you take some huge *** pliers and twist the chrome part of the shifter till it breaks the rubber inside that holds it together, then you just get a shift *** that has the 3 allen keys at the bottom and tighten it on the bottom part of the shifter, and there you go, you now have a short shifter.

I used a slightly modified Miata Short Shifter. $40 off eBay. Very similar if not identical to the Mazdatrix shifter. It's the real deal and not a butchered and hacked stock shifter.

If you decide to install a short throw shifter, you probably need to read the write-up posted at the Mazdatrix site on short throws. Some of them rattle, and if yours rattles it might be hard to get the rattle out of it. The effort to shift is increased slightly by a short throw and of course the pattern will feel much tighter. These things are just stuff you'll need to get used to. My short throw shifter rattled and through some creativeness I think I've pretty much gotten it tamed. I wouldn't have a sports car without a short throw shifter.

The stock shifter lever is a two piece design with a rubber vibration isolator sleeve inside.
That rubber can crumble, which makes the shifter feel "spongy"

I'm running an e-bay Miata short throw shifter.
It works great.

Rotarymarine..that would work..Lookin at the Pic you see that the ball at the bottom is spaced more between the top ball and that is what gives the shifter more Leverage to make the Throws shorter..Looks like a good Product..and IMO..anything with HIGGI on it has to be good!!..read alot of good stuff on the guy (though I don't personally know him..PLUG!)..I used a Miata ShortThrow (because I wanted it NOW and was Cheap!)..and lastly, cutting a shifter just makes it Short but not Short throw..any how to the thread starter...Best of Luck..misterstyx69

"butchered?" Nah. Never touched the shifter. Modified a single spacer is all.

EBAY Miata short throw shifter.(like crispy) All you have to do is do a little sanding on the bottom bushing and wallah. It is a huge difference in throw. ie... cheap and easy!

In most cases cutting the shifter down would not make the throw shorter i'll agree with you there, but because of the way the shifter was designed from the factory like a metal tube with a pivot point in the middle, changing the length on the input side of the shifter actually does give it a shorter throw, i have an 86 MR2 as well but i'm not gunna cut that shifter down to make it a "short" shifter. it wouldn't work at all.............but good try.
