Shopping for a TII--what were the changes made on the 89 on cars?
Wondering what Mazda changed on the 89 and on Turbo II's. Also what should I be looking for in particular with the turbos? I have a NA, but I'm not familiar with the turbo II's.
Thanks.
Thanks.

The intake manifold and ports are a little different. The airflow meter and turbo are also different--better. The body is a little nicer. The 89-91 cars have 18 extra HP, but that can be made up pretty easily.

The 89 and above, in my opinion, are the best ones out there.
The interior is nicer, with different leather than earlier, the gauge pod is nicer, you get those REALLY cool round tail lights, and much nicer bumpers, and a sweeter looking front air dam.
The best part is the engine. More power, higher redline (8000 rpm), lighter, higher compression rotors, a six port system that DOESN'T (Thank god) use exhaust backpressure to actuate!
I have had both incarnations of the second gen, and I wouldn't go back to my 88 after having my 90 in a million years!
Not to get on anyones bad side, I'm just saying that if you have the choice, try to get an 89+, but they are much more rare, expeccially tII's.

'89+ TII redlines at 7k.
'89+ has:
lighter rotors
lighter flywheel
higher compression
different mirrors and round taillights
different front fascia
18 additional hp
I know a guy with a 10th anniversary edition and he does not have the front lip spoiler or side skirts that are on my car.

The 89+ have 18 more HP but weigh more as well. So basically the same 1/4 mile times. 89+ have the better lights & the 89+ NAs have the better 6th port accuation system. 89+ have higher compression rotors which don't make them as reliable but put out more power. 89+ is prolly the better, but a well taken care of 86-88 is more reliable & cheaper. Personally, if I was to get an NA I would and had a choice I would get an 89+. If I had a choice on a good deal for a TII it would be a 87-88, don't think they made TIIs in 86 but not sure. Thats just me.

Did all 89-91 TIIs have black interiors? I remember white 89-91 FCs had the blue interiors but FEDREX has a black interior on his white TII.
Either way...black interiors are my the best looking IMHO.

"Did all 89-91 TIIs have black interiors?"
as far as I know the 89-91 TII if they had leather it was either black or blue. I knew a guy with a 90 TII it also had black leather interior. And i also believe that the blue leather only was in the white TII..so the red and black TIIs had black leather or cloth..but i could be wrong..just basically going by what i have seen for sale.
