shopping for an NA fc

i am looking to buy an older year NA fc, what do you think is the cheapest price i could expect for one that is still running? thanks

also, any idea what it would be for a 17 year old to insure one of these? liability. i was hoping it would be cheaper for an old car w/o turbo.

I've seen them as low as $400 barely running. Average is around $2000, +-500 in my area. Insurance depends on location, driving record, and age so you'll probably need to get a quote.

It'll definitely be cheaper for what you're looking for. When I was 18 and had an NA FC, my insurance rates came out to about 189/mo for liability. I don't consider it to be that bad and I live down here in South Florida. But, it's best to get qoutes for insurance. Dan is right, average is around $2000 +/-$500... You'll definitely have a blast with the FC and welcome to the forum.

ty for the welcome, lol 400$ sounds good haha. I have a 95 240sx and its great, but im not sure.. its almost like its too nice you know? heh that probably sounds silly but all the moulded interior and leather seats and stuff.... my dream car has forever been an old fiero with a junkyard turbo and an ice chest for an IC that i have to refill each run

anyway, i have about 1000 saved up and i was planning on getting coilovers for my 240, but when i saw how cheap an fc can get, my mind started wandering heh. I could probably get as much as i paid for my 240 (5400) but i cant make up my mind...

a couple of "USE THE DAMN SEARCH BUTTON" questions, if you please

-how much power do the na fc's make? i was told around 100 hp / tq?

-any factory lsd?

-7's have very good suspension setup from the factory, correct? and if anyone has driven a 240sx, would you say worse or better?

-anyone know a good site that i can get a tyte body kit off of? and where could i get some jdm clearcorners? also i need a phat carbon fiber spoiler yo. err.. what?

any opinions?? stay with the 240 or try and sell it for what i paid and have roughly 3k to mod an fc for drift? or instead of an fc look for an s13 240(bout the same price i believe)?

From the FAQ at the top of the board, S4 (Series 4) being 86-88 and S5 (Series 5) being 89-92:

How much Horsepower did my car come with from the factory?
S4 NA = 146 HP @ 6500 RPM w/ 138 Ft/lb @ 3500 RPM
S4 Turbo = 182 @ 6500 RPM w/ 183 Ft/lb @ 3500 RPM
S5 NA = 160 HP @ 7000 RPM w/ 140 Ft/lb @ 4000 RPM
S5 Turbo = 200-202 @ 6500 RPM w/ 196 Ft/lb @ 3500 RPM

Did my FC come with a Limited Slip Differential?
Only the following FCs had a LSD from the factory:
86-88 GXL
87-91 T2
88 GTU
89-90 GTUs (however not the 89-90 GTU)
It is also rumored that a few rare 91 coupes with both the A (upgraded the interior trim, added a power sunroof, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, and 4 piston front disc brakes and vented single piston rear brakes) and the B package (leather seating, a CD player, and rear cargo cover) came with a LSD, but you should note that Mazda denies that any FC other than the T2 came with a LSD in 91). You can also tell by looking at the differential as there will be a LSD tag on S4 cars with a LSD.

ahh yea on the performance specs i imagined he meant rwhp. i imagine that on my budget i will most likley (if at all) get a s4 na. compared to an s14 (155hp/160tq, 2700lb curb) do you think an rx7 would feel pretty similar, or would the handling be sharper from the reduced weight and i am pretty sure the spring rates are higher etc. on fcs than s14s? also i guess the pickup would be about the same since the 7 is probably a few hundred lighter?'

also another search button question - what is the redline on the tach, and what is a suggested redline to help with reliability, or is this not as big of a problem with the NA? i think the problem with the turbo models was the restrictive turbo plumbing, correct (talking out of my ***, tell me if im wrong :P)

S4 NA's are around ~2650-2750 on average with some variables so they're about the same weight anyways.

Handling, I'm not too sure. You'll need to ask someone who has had experience with both. Speed should be very close, I think the RX7 might be a tad faster "maybe" due to gearing and the torque curve. The KA24DE makes a lot of low end torque but loses its power in the upper RPM range while a 13B is opposite where it makes most of its power in the upper RPM range.

Better be careful with the bodykit... There are plenty who just have nothing to good to say about them... However, there are plenty of websites and even threads about each body kit for the 2nd gen. I'd link them all if I had the links, but I'll just tell you the companies that do make some kits: RE-Amemiya (the most desired in my opinion), Knight Sport, Feed, GP-Sports, Bomex, and others whos names escape my mind at the moment. Just to see the kits, check out www.jt-imports.com

edit: Forgot to mention Mariah Motorsports, also.
