Shock tower speaker pods
Shock tower speaker pods
What size speaker's do the OEM pods use? I've read people using 6.5" in the rear but wasn't sure if they were using these pods, or adapter plates. I just want to know what fits in these pods to keep the car as OEM on the interior as possible.
I believe stock was 4". It was small, that's for sure. I certainly admire the goal of keeping things OEM, but you won't be replacing it with an exact OEM speaker, so I'd go with whatever you want. The benefit of sticking with an OEM size is you won't have to cut the stock mounting plate.
Thanks for that. I'd really like to keep the interior as OEM as possible. Wasn't the 4" speaker for the front(under the dash)? I could be wrong. I've never had speakers in this car
Yeah, the 4" was definitely under dash. Maybe the rear was the 5 1/4" which were in the doors and in the rear. It's been a long time since I've seen OEM speakers.

you can fit 6.5's in the back without the pods.
I got 8 inch woofers in the shock towers and they just fit.The covers fit nicely over them.

the opening in the rear shock tower is 8" (actually its probably 200mm).
Mazda used a few different speaker setups, usually on an adaptor plate. it seems like 4" rears were the common ones, but the GXL's had a speaker pod thing, with a built in amp
so if you have the adaptor, its easy to cut a hole and run whatever you want, as its under the speaker cover.

I've seen guys just make a wooden plywood template and stick whatever speaker on that and place it in the strut tower.
Whatever floats the canoe..!

East Bound And Down...
I have a friend that has an old Firebird restored and it is kinda cool for what it is. I think it's a '78 but not sure. 6.6, black, T-tops, tan interior, gold honeycombs, gold bird on the hood. Looks brand new.
