Shifter return spring mystery

So I searched, and searched and searched and found several threads regarding how to replace the shifter return spring on the transmission and nobody got any real answers on how to replace it. I have no idea either.

So if anybody can tell me (in detail) how to replace the god damn thing, I'll take pictures and post a how to so those of us in sloppy shifter peril can finally find an answer.

I haven't attempted this myself because I've gotten used to not having the one on the 1-2 side, but here are two threads you might find interesting.

In this thread is a discussion about whether it is possible to do this job without removing the transmission from the car. Wozzoom says yes:

In this thread, there are more details about how you actually do it:

Just replaced shifter bushings several months ago and figured I do the spring as well. The return spring installation is detailed in the FSM.

You need to remove the tail housing from the transmission, remove the cover panel on the side of it. The spring is in there but its a B***H to get out. After prying at it for a hour with some vice grips then beating it on the ground, I gave up and put mine back in with the loose spring.
