I changed my shifter bushings last saturday. 88 gxl automatic. My shifter was really loose, I had almost 3/4 inch of play when I wobbled it side to side.
My old bushings, which were factory and original, had disenigrated and were crumbled in the shifter cup/recessed area. They looked like reddish, brown fiberboard material.
I ordered mine from mazda, they were brand new and of a blusih urethane material, which you could tell would really last.
The install was easy, although when you pull the shifter up, youll see where it connects to a longer arm that hoos to the transmission.. its connected with 2-3 washers and a cotter pin. I carefully pulled the cotter pin, so the whole shifter came out, then I took it on my kitchen table and put in trhe bushings. It was very easy.
Also order 2 LOWER bushings too, when you reconnect the shifter, you can install one of the lower bushings in the arm { with the cotter pin }. The other bushings is under the car and youd need to get under it. I havent done that one yet.
After I had my shifter on, it was ROCK SOLID, with no play whatsoever. A great weekend project.
YEah, definately go with new ones, mazda has them still or the other guys do too.

In the mazdatrix writeup they mention an upper and lower bushing, a blue and a white one. I went to a dealership to get my bushings and I realized something: the blue and white bushings are pretty much the same thing. I asked them for the upper and lower shifter bushings and of course the guy said there's no such thing listed in the catalog, as I expected. So when I ordered a bushing from them they gave me the blue one... the one that's supposed to not exist. I asked them if they had a white bushing and it turns out that Mazda lists the S4 bushing as white and the S5 bushing as blue.
That's why there's no "upper and lower" bushings in their parts catalog: the bushings are the same thing! The color is irrelevent. Mind you, I did go and buy a blue one and a white one just for the hell of it but I don't think it matters. They are identical in everything but color, including the spring that's included. It sounds to me like Mazdatrix is just trying to convince everyone that you need to buy bushings from them because they have the "top secret" bushings or something. Each bushing is like $12 from the dealership, and they had them in stock. I recommend you go to the dealer and ask them for two shifter bushings for a 2nd gen and the color be damned.
Has nobody else realized this???

well i'm sure some of you would rather spend the money on the bushing but for a little over a year now i've meen using slices of pvc pipe as bushings top and bottom. they are a little stiff at first but after a week or two they feel great and considering i used scrap pipe from a construction site down the street the price is unbeatable
