Shifter questions

I have a shifter question. While the engine and trans are now removed from my parts car, I want to repair the problem of the shifter not returning back to center from the 1st/2nd gate. What is broken? What's the best approach for repairing it? Is it safe to just use grease in the shifter hole since the shift rod tube seems to leak where it goes into the transmission casing?

And yes, the bushings are fine. I do need new boots though.

heh...I have the same problem. I am assuming from the pics I've seen that the large rubber middle boot is what returns the stick to the middle of the neutral position. I'm planning on buying the shifter repair kit available from rx7world (only on ebay). Hopefully that should cure our problem.

Free Bump.. lol

Umm, I just noticed a day or so, that mine did that too. It's only done it a few times, but got me skeeeered..Hahaha.

This damn car and it's expenses(I know I know)

Um, so What can we do to fix this?

|M|

^ well, I have replaced all the bushings and boots in my tranny only 6-9 months ago, so it's not the boot that moves it back....

Kai, that spring is still ok(or seems to be ok) in mine, maybe I will try to replace it...
(when I replaced the boots, I could see the spring had worn on the shifter, making it a little rough. Nothing a dremel didn't fix...) Maybe I need to just check it out again.

There is actually a little spring in the trans that pushes the shifter back to center, they do break once in a while.

If it will not spring back from 1-2, it is the spring in the shifter box. The socket the shifter goes into is pushed back by a spring around the shifter rod.

The Mazda part number is M501-17-465b Shift selector spring. Very inexpensive, about $5.

I bought one, but couldn't figure out how to put it in while I had the tranny out, I had to get her back on the road fast as it was my only car. I believe you must remove the tail housing to allow the shift rod to come out so you can put the new spring around it. I'm sure someone like Icemark or KevinLanders or NZConvertible might know how to do it.

Thank you for the link. Damn this seems like a PITA for a stupid little spring. I'm half tempted to do nothin with it, but the motor and trans are out, and I'm in no rush to get it going.

Clipped from the FSM:

The lower spring centers from 5 & R.
The rear spring centers from 1 & 2.

Yeah, that's the one. I looked and it's broken. Will I have to rip the bitch apart to get to it?

Well, I got a junk trans with a good spring, I removed the parts I needed. The spring was not in proper position. I need to know where the hairpin portion of the spring is supposed to rest.

well, I figured it out, Now to put it all together in the trans I'm going to use. The "hairpin" portion of the spring is supposed to sit on top of the block next to where the shifter goes in.

Thanks to those who helped. I guess I didn't use the right search terms when I researched this problem.
