shifter housing Q's

Ok, I've lost my Lock ball that goes on the end of the spring that goes in the drain plug for the shifter housing.. . Is this peice nessasery> what does it do exactly> I looked through the FSM and couldn't find anything on it. When I did have it before I lost the ball, when I would put it in it would make is so that I couldn't shift into 3,4,5, or reverse. Is there a certain gear or something that the shifter has to be in to put the plug/spring/ball in correctly. I know that someone out there knows this stuff, help me out. Thank
Dom
