shifter bushing question..and trans question

got an 86 with a sloppy shifter..my 88 has a good tight feel shifting..instead of putting bushings on the 86 shifter can I just swap the shifters ..(call me cheap)..now Part two,,the 86 may need a new clutch..so I was going to grab that too off the 88..the 88tranny makes a rolling gear noise when you start it but goes away when the clutch is in..is that pilot bearing or throw out bearing?..86 is noiseless..regardless..hope the questions are not too crammed in ..appreciate anything guys..THANKS..misterstyx69

Throw out bearing. Mine does the same. And your 86 needs bushings not a new shifter.

Thanks Omixeo..I plan to replace the throw-out bearing ..doing the clutch,it it always wise to do it..the thing I'm tryin to get at is the bushings are on the shifter shaft..on the ball ..is it not..so If I swap shifters it should take the slop out..am I right or is it more than that?..thanks again...

ok, so you're trying to fix the shifter, which has bad bushings, and you have another shifter assembly with good bushings... why not swap over the bushings requiring the removal of 3 bolts and less than 10 minutes? to swap shifter assemblies you'll have to basically disassemble part of the transmission/drill out roll pins, etc.

better yet, the bushing set is at the most 30 bucks shipped and then both cars will shift well.

Id just spend the money and get the bushings from mazdatrix. You never know how long those other bushings will last. For all you know they could still be stock.

I have exactly the opposite problem the shift is to tight like the 1-2 shift is way to firm... I think the previous owner put a short shift kit on... Should i replace with stock bushings?

if you had a short shifter you'd know it. the Mazdatrix kit is much shorter, much firmer, and also much notchier than stock, even with new bushings

by the clutch "in" do you mean engaged or disengaded

there is a good diagnosis chart on the mazda trix website, you should be able to tell what is wrong from there
