I have a write-up for us cheap RX-7 owners. First of all many of you know how much a set of shifter boots cost. It's $65+. I found a much less costly alternative at the Advance Auto, I believe it's Kragen in other areas.

I found a Mr. Gasket generic shifter boot for old musclecar shifters. It was $10.99 before tax.



Here's what the situation looks like before you start



Slip the rubber boot over the shifter and position where you like it Next put the chrome trim piece on. Then use some 3/4 inch hex head self-drilling screws to attach the assembly to the transmission tunnel.





This shifter boot works just fine at keeping the noise and heat out and its a hell of a lot cheaper.

 

I would use a ziptie to tighten up the boot around the shifter.

 

does it seal any exhaust gasses out though?

 

The hole in it is a small slit. It is a very tight fit.

It shouldn't have to. I have no exhaust leaks. It works quite well. I tested it last night on a spitrited drivefor about an hour.

 

I was about to post a want add for one of these after seeing how much they are at the dealer. Good find and thanks for the write up. Hope they have them at the stores here.

Found the peice and installed the sucker in a bout 15 minutes. I used the factory bolts and metal surround, just took a little creative position to make sure it was still a snug fit. Good find!

 

If you're good at sewing you can make your own after picking up some vinyl leather. I made mine for about $9 and I still have about 2.5yds of material left. I also made a boot for my e-brake.

 

I was speaking from experience on the ziptie. After awhile it wiggled its way down and got in the way. And after a while i may start to split. Just my 0.02

 

I have one of those shifters in my truck and it splits really easily. I tore mine with a freaking snow broom. they should have used a more pliable material to make them out of.

I made one out of a sink plunger.

 

I got a shift boot for $10 shipped on ebay.

i was just about to head to a local shop to buy the 3 piece set. they wanted 50cnd and had them in stock... but this sounds like a good deal. I'll have to check out lordco or napa later on.

 

It looks like I need to clarify that this replacement part is supposed to replace the very costly 3 piece inner boot set. Not the cosmetic "pleather" boot that you see when driving the car.

I hope you washed it after using it in the toilet.

It seems plenty pliable to me.

The nice thing is, you can replace this setup MANY times before it would cost the same as the OEM set.

 

I did this with my car and it works pretty well. Here's a pic of it installed using the OEM bolts. The little hole in the upper left corner is the one that didn't match up with the OEM bolt holes, but that's nothing to complain about, especially for a $10 solution to a $60 problem!

 

what was the item # of the boot?

 

its a nice quick fix but how long does this last compared to OEM

I did this a few weeks ago and it works well. $10 an boom, all done. I got mine at autozone, just some cheezy off brand but it is the same as pictured above.

 

ok ill hit autozone up tomarrow lol.. its missing on my car, theres nothing under the vinyl boot... so it might cut down the "fumes" alot i hope lol

to anyone who is gonna do this, be careful, the plastics are really brittle now, and that bottom right bolt is a pain to get to.
