Hey, it seems as though the only replacement shift ***** out there that are threaded for our shifters are made by veilside and mazdaspeed. These ***** only fit '89 and newer rx-7s (s5 and FD) So.....does anyone out there have a different brand **** that works? Anyone ever found a "universal fit" **** that would actually hold the shifter and not vibrate loose after a few minutes? If you have a "universal" ****, what do you do, put some loctite on the threads of the little set screws? What brand/style **** do you have?

 

I find the shifter too long.... and I got a nice **** that made it even longer!!
So I cut the shifter down about 2 inches- so there is just less than 1/2 inch of the skinny part at the top of the shifter lever left.. I drill two little holes on either side of it, in about 1/8 of an inch, then I drilled corresponding holes on either side of the collar on the bottom of the shift ****.
I put the **** on top, and put two small screws on either side in the holes, and it works great!, The shifter is a lot shorter, and the **** is nicer too- and only about 20 bucks at pep boys.
There is a pic of my interior in my member gallery- it may show the **** a bit, I forget.. the pic sucks, and I didn't make the surround fo the AFC yet either.

 

What kind of surround are you making for the afc? I might be interested in one if you fab somethin up...

 

Oh, I'm just dremelling the ash tray cover to fit around it, that's all.

 

right, I have a short shift kit on mine, so it's like grabbing this little stump, but I don't like the looks of the "made to fit" *****. What I want is just like a little aluminum ball, but they are all universal fits and so they suck as far as i know. Even **** like MOMO! they are universal and so they are mo-mo shitty than stock What do all you other guys do?

 

i have a mazdaspeed carbon fiber look one,
personally the shift **** is too damn light, comparing to the stock S5 ones...but it 's no big deal i got used to it, plus i don't leave my hand on the shift **** most of the time

anyway, the mazdaspeed one looks pretty good imo, but the mazdaspeed logo is on the right side of the shift **** so the driver don't get to see it

 

I have a Momo. Polished stainless sides with a strip of Carbon Fiber. I would like to be barried with it.

 

XLR8: how did you attach it? I mean if they will go on and stay put, I'd love a Momo. Fill me in bro.

 

Actually I think that the "universal method" for shiftknobs fitting is very effective. Just take off old ****, cut off the shifter stick about 2-3cm, then place the little rubber that fits best on the stick, place the new ****, tighten the three little screws all around evenly, and then cover the screws with the little metal cover that screws on from the bottom of the shifter.

Clean job, nice fit, not vibrations (if you fit the best rubber "cap" that you can find), and definetely shorter shift and faster throws. What more do you want ?

 

I agree. This is my shift ****. I got it for $30, practically new. The **** is very small (actually shortens the lever by a noticeable amount), and grips well. The universal fit you are all complaining about is perfect. It has never come loose. How many of you actually have quality universal ***** you are complaining about?

 

OK. I guess universal it is than. I had an experience with a cheaper universal **** and it pissed me off. I mean if I'm paying 30-80 bux for a damn **** I don't want that bitch to come loose on me. And I guess the people at Momo and places like that know what the **** they are doing so I shouldn't stress it. Thanks guys. By the way, I like the looks of the veilside *****, but just can't find anyone who sells them.

Here is a surefire way to prevent the universal shift ***** from coming loose and falling off:

Test fit the new shift **** on your stick

Take a small pencil or scribe and mark the set-screw hole locations.

Find a drill bit that is the same size (or a bit smaller) as the set screws that come with the ****.

Take the new shift **** back off the shifter.

Drill into your shifter at the three marked set-screw locations. Not too far, just a few mm will be enough.

Reinstall your new shift ****. Now your set screws will actually go into the shifter, so apply a little locktite and install the set-screws.

Start shifting "mad quik, yo" without fear that your new shift **** will work itself loose

This is if you drill the holes VERY carefully, because if you don't, you might not be able to screw the set screw in much at all.

I like my Razo shift *****.&nbsp They come with 10mm or 12mm "plastic inserts" that you screw on tightly once.&nbsp These do not back out, but they tend to spin a little unless you crank it all the way down.&nbsp My '87 Turbo II used the smaller 10mm insert.

I have the Mazdaspeed carbon fiber **** mounted on my short throw and because it is so light at high RPM's it will vibrate like crazy. But it doesn't bother me that is why I have a loud *** stereo. Other than that I love it fits perfect in my hand.
