She passed Emissions modded!!!

Cars got to say the least:

*the works*

-RB Turbo Back with Bonez 3" cat replacing the pre-silencer.
-Greddy FMIC
-tob4 p/vtrim .84 A/R
-550cc/1680cc
-HALTECH E6k
-PLX Wideband
-Swapped leading plugs for colder trailing
-Some kind GM electric airpump from Ebay
-Rebuilt engine with Atkins seals
-Street ported housings of some kind
-8 oz premix per tank

Here in Georgia theres not much to the test. I had to pass at 15 and 25 MPH as well as pass a gas ca pressure test.

I first leaned out the mixture over the past 2 weeks trying to make MPG and tune for more efficiency. I got the Haltech tuned to about 15:1 during 75 cruising and about 14:1 for around town cruising. I hooked up the electric airpump through a relay and to the battery. The whole time it was pumping basically unfiltered air straight to the new Bonez highflow cat. Man that airpump has an earpiercing whine alright.

SO it took like 15 minutes for the duffus to get things working while he was talking on the phone with his buddy. He had to put the vin number in his computer 4 times cause he kept fat fingering the keyboard. I was getting worried that the cat would cool off while idling for so damn long but I guess the airpump saved the day.

Results:

Speed WB_A/F HC/MAX CO/MAX RPM/MAX NO/allowed RESULT
25 14.7:1 64/168 .01/1.08 2067/3000 52/1208 PASS
15 13.6:1 48/173 .31/.98 1778/3000 94/1323 PASS

Gas cap test: PASS

Resulting performance with the Bonez Hiflow:

I was pretty concerned about losing a bunch of power with this piece but to my surprise everything seems close to what it was before. I was doing some tuning last night with the cat in place and the first thing I noticed was the A/F was waaaay too rich due to not having the flow but probably having the same ammount of fuel. I had to pull about .5 miliseconds out up top to get her back into the 10.3 to 10.7:1 range. My boost also dropped from 15psi down to 14psi until 7,000rpm at which point the boost was about 12psi: so I definatly lost airflow due to backpressure. I jacked the boost back up a bit and now the car is back at 15psi of boost through the whole rpm with good A/F. It honestly does not feel too much slower, maybe about 25 rwhp or so. I think the clean air benefit outweighs the performance of not having a cat, especially for a street car.

Cheers!

*UPDATE

Its been about 6 month since I've been running the bonez highflow cat and about 8000 miles of all sorts of driving.

Gotta say this cat just aint goon last too much longer. I was in it to fix a few exhaust leaks and the front honeycomb was crumbled/clogged and restrictive. I carefully pulled out the entire fron honeycomb so now I only have the rear half of the cat working. I also had to retune the haltech again on account of more airflow since it was lean by about .3 a/f (Now back down to a rock steady 11:1).

I dont think I'd pass smog without getting another cat but for the next 11 months I'll just keep driving the way I want.

On a side note, I did take this old cat to both a mufler shop AND MazCare in Atlanta; Both places said the cat wont last more than another few months.

The muffler shop suggested a wire wound cat for better performance AND longevity from heat next time! He said he uses this style of cat on drag cars with antilag circuitry with excelent longevity results, plus they are only like 90 on ebay!

awesome. I wonder how well you could have ran running E85. Do they even ask what type of fuel you're running?

Not too many questions by the emissions tech, just that he was fumbling around for so damn long i finally had to tell him to get off the phone with his buddy.

I used 93 octane and am premixing, but for the test I ran the premix a lot leaner. Just after the test I added more premix.

i take my cat off right after the test. that way i get the performance I want, and still have a decent cat when the test rolls around again. Should last 10 years the way I use the cat!

With a Stand alone EMS it's no problem having the best of both worlds. I'm on the same boat right now. I live in a non emissions state, but moving to Dallas where they do perform emissions.

I'm so glad we threw out emissions tests in NC two years ago for OBD I cars. Of course it was a joke before that... bribery was rampant

We don't even have emissions testing here, except maybe a visual inspection if it's a commercial vehicle or you royally pissed off a LEO, which I try my darndest not to do...

Wish I could do that in CA. Some areas are more paticular than others, but your set up wouldn't fly at ANY place!!!

Wish I could man, but Im a bit too old to have a weekend driver stink up everything. Know this: street porting with premix on an open loop haltech STINKS!! I may want to have kids one day, so that extra 2 tenths in the quarter mile is lower priority. Seriously, not one girl even wanted to take a ride with me when I had no cat cause it smelled like crap, my clothes smelled like crap, and my garage even smelled like crap. Seriously I only lost about 25hp with the cat.

i dont really know what the difference is in my set up then, because my car only smells of gas if it's running real rich.

I;ve got two mufflers and still have the charcoal canister hooked up. Mine is running in closed loop... maybe that's the difference...?

My car passed CA emissions with a 50 dollar catco converter in the down pipe, its now hollowed out, I will just put another one in in 2 years when I do emissions again.

My car is a street legal 13b-rew swap (well sort of) with a haltech E8, all it takes to pass CA emissions is to look mostly stock.
