She Followed Me Home, Honest

The Gigabyte board with an Intel chipset tested the same drive at 7.7.
Nvidia made stupid chipsets and went back to concentrating on graphics, which they are good at.
My friend, who gave me the board, said that it couldn't tell the difference between a three drive striped RAID and a single drive.

Gee, thanks for asking.
The Z is in limbo...no idea what is going to happen to her.
I've barely heard from Sigfrid since he moved and suspect a sale is likely.
A few days ago- as the east coast got snow tornadoes- Denver was 70° and I was saddened to realize that I cared so little about my FC that I didn't even wash her.
The bloom may be off the rose and I suspect the upcoming emissions test could be a make/break
event in our relationship.
I like to be involved with my hardware and if I've lost interest and cannot reconnect with the 7, she may have to follow the Z into Craigslist.
I continue to be fascinated by the simple intricacies of my "new" aircooled PC case.
It's the same "black/white" beauty I found in racing...develop an idea, make it so and see (either by stopwatch or temp sensor) if it's better or worse.
My old, rat-rod, stripped bare chassis computer used to sit on the window ledge but this new case is entirely too massive to fit and has, perforce, moved onto the desk, right next to me.
So, noise is an issue.
Balancing the output CFM against the resulting db is the tricky part.
Actually, the really tricky bit is deciding what the desired target temps should be.
Those numbers open the rabbit hole I've climbed down and hope to soon escape.

My FC failed emission testing a couple months back. 2000 HC, high CO...I assumed the cat was no good. I started to pre-mix the car as one of the 6 ports were sticking and the pre-mix broke free the stuck port and combined with a weeks worth of beating the crap out of the car it passed with nearly all zeroes. Dont give up on her yet!

I've lived in VA (Arlington) and much prefer CO, thank you.
And there is no such thing as "too many bowls", go wash out your mouth with soap.
I'm not unhappy with the FC's performance, so not sure what a turbo/standalone would do for me or the emission issue.
Oddly- and wildly impractically- I've been thinking of a FZR400 as an interesting vehicle to own.

I was talking about your mental state, not thecst ate you reside in! Turbocharging the car or a car will be a tim consuming project, wiring up the standalone, removing things you don't need from the OE harness, time in the FSM etc. You'll also plan the build, get your parts, build the engine etc. Hell, you could probably build your own turbo kits using mostly parts from cars in the salvage yard.
Don't you have a garage? Clean it out, move the car in and buy a kerosene heater.
You just seen like you have some sort of winter depression.

in the midwest we call it a "funk". I have made zero attempt to do anything to my car either this winter, so don't feel bad. Motivation is slowly returning however and I almost pulled off the car cover yesterday.

Before we get too carried away though, let's remember that my FC is a daily, not a weekend toy. If I'm going somewhere, it's in the RX...snow, rain, etc., etc.
It's a full time job keeping her going and the list of little **** just grows and grows.
None of "what should be done" is terribly intensive/expensive, it's the time and exposure that daunts me.
For example, I should flush the brake fluid- I've got the fluid and speedbleeders on the calipers, so it's an easy one man job. The stupid clock has fritzed out again. I actually hate that clock but it's become a bellweather for the overall condition of the car (for some reason I can't explain).
It's just little stuff, the car continues to run well and reliably.
How a car with no compression and a seven year old battery manages to fire right up in sub-zero weather is a mystery to me...and the main reason I still feel affection for her.
By all rights she should be pining for the fjords but she refuses to act her age.
I'm actually in awe.
Meanwhile, my short dabble back into computer ephemera spirals out of control.
I ditched ten days work and started all over in my final case, a Silverstone TJ-07.
There's actually a (slender) car connection here.
This was ( a maybe still is) the apex of the line and unique in its construction.
The main body- top, front and bottom- are a single thick aluminum casting/extrusion that is bent into a u shape (the u lays on its side and the open top becomes the back).
Silverstone used BMW to bend the casting into shape...supposedly, the presses used to form bumpers.
Unlike normal multipiece cases, which rely on the inner structure (optical/HDD racks) to provide stiffness, this case uses the "skin" as structure and needs no inner bracing at all. Because the casting is so thick (it varies between about 5-10 mm) and they wanted it to look nice (it's anodized a matte black), all the standard inner stuff (the aforementioned racks) screws in and is removable.
Which is handy because I don't need any of it.
Realized that I couldn't recall the last time I burned a disc (or needed to read one), so there's no optical (the case will-originally- accommodate six + two floppy drives...the good old days, I guess) and solid state drives are tiny, non-vibrating things that require no real support or heat considerations (remember Raptors?).
With the interior basically empty and wide open, I've been free to go nuts with fan placement and cooling theories.
It is surprisingly counterintuitive and semi-applicable to automotive practice.
Ducting is everything.

I still have 2 150GB veloci-raptors. It wasnt but 6 months later that SSDs were available at a decent price.
Those see-through covers will hold a special place in my heart.
maybe the super cold weather cools the engine down so quick that it cant have hot-start issues?

troubleshooting sucks
I too have done absolutely eff all with my 7. Not having a garage is definately a contributing factor but its mostly laziness and unwillingness to do anything when its cold out.. It really is impressive that you run the 7 all winter i wouldnt dare. Do they salt the roads in colorado?

I'm feeling the spring buzz this weekend! 50's tomorrow and 60's on Sunday. We just had snow ice and single digits this past week so it's clean the car (DD, oh well) and put that new leather wrap on the steering wheel. Clean garage Sunday.
Might even go try and wet a line over at the conservation lake by my house on Sunday too.

Three of 'em, in RAID 0.
Ever hear of/see a Gigabyte i-RAM?
It was a PCI-e card with four DIMM slots, each would support 1GB of DDR ram (4GB...woohoo!). It was the first consumer level SSD and I ran XP on it.
Can't run an OS on 4gb anymore but that card, with the Raptor array as storage was blindingly fast for the day.
Of course, the Raptors were hot/noisy as hell but that was the price one paid back then. We suffered and we loved it.

We don't get that much snow and when we do, I just stay home...there's no where to go anyway.

I housesit for Sigfrid again next weekend and I have to get this computer project finished beforehand, so I'll miss the nice weather now and have to hope it continues while I'm over there and can work on the car.

A few years ago, Denver got one of it's (relatively) rare blizzards and after a few days, my FC was the first car to make it out of the neighborhood. All the useless 4wd/SUV/CUV rolling chicanes sat while I made it out.
It's not that I can't, it's that I usually don't see the point.

Damn, you are brave Clokker. I am running RAID 0+1 with 4 single platter 500GB seagate drives (almost as fast as an SSD, almost) and I still worry.
With 3 drives striped without RAID 1 mirroring I'd poop myself every time I had to boot up.

I haven't run RAID in years, SSDs are the way to go if speed is the goal.
I did RAID my first pair of solid states- just because I could- but it's ultimately not worth the effort/risk.
At this point, I'm only running one 120gb SSD in the machine and have 7tb of storage sitting in a desk drawer. I don't game and therefore don't need storage for maps and realized my "media collection" was more about hoarding than anything else.
When the **** am I supposed to watch 22 seasons of South Park?
These days, pretty much all a normal home PC has to do is get on the internet and yet we want computers that could run NASA...it's like 600hp street cars.
I mean, you can...but why?

I have a monster gaming rig, although my video card is DX10. I always upgrade my video card last because they usually don't get any faster really, but rather just gain DX$$ version instead these days.
With my 4 single platter drives at RAID 0+1 I have ALMOST the same read speed as an SSD and damn sure faster write speed. I also have a wicked gigabyte mobo and overclokkered CPU (Phenom II black edition) with server fans for the case and peltier cooling for the CPU.
My nect upgrade is getting rid of the peltier stuff since it sucks 300 watts of power and going for a water setup, just haven't got there yet. I have been focusing my monies towards tools for work and **** for my car.
I am an installer and have every automotive tool imaginable, but at my new job we also do detailing so I have been dropping serious cash on power tools for detailing.
(I now work for CarToys)

That's almost as exotic as liquid nitrogen OCers.
If you go water, I'd recommend only doing the vid card(s).
New(ish) CPUs are pretty cool these days, it's the stupid graphics that run so hot and have no room for cooling.
Watch out for tubing (use Tygon, btw)...it eats up a lot more room than you'd think.
You might think you have a large case until the plumbing goes in and then suddenly, it gets very crowded.
Water works well but seriously makes the computer a PITA to work on.

just picked up a gtx 960 SSC from EVGA (only nvidia brand I run) to replace my aged SLI GTX460's. I him-hawed the 970, but that extra hundred went into my turbo fund for my spare keg.
I typed a long winded thing as I work on and refurbish server hardware for a living, but digressed.
