Thumbs up "Shaker hood scoop"

I have a really neat idea, I removed the top of the airfilter box leaving the exposed airfilter and it got me thinking........you could mount a hood scoop in place of the top airfilter box and then cut a hole in the hood so when you close it, Voila the shaker is back. How hard do you think this would be to perfect?

Any ideas?

it would only work during the day because at night when the headlight pops up it would retrict all the air

now if you could get it to the center of the hood like the old hemicuda's...that would be sweet and you could sign me up for one too. i always wanted a shaker hood.

this is the dumbest thread i have seen to date....... no just kidding.

i have seen dumber. the idea of a "shaker" would mean that the scoop is actually on the engine. but good thinking. actually it would be more realistic to have a scoop on the hood so that your air doesnt come solely from that scoop. i am actually planning on making some to sell when i get some materials

the problem is in the headlights. you have to have air coming in from underneath while they are up so that you can get air.

I have a simliar system- though I don't an engine mounted scoop protuding through the hood.
I am using a custom fabbed cold air box though- its completely sealed to the hood, and theroetically should develop some subtatial positive pressure when traveling at speed.

Here are some (bad) pics

The air box

The scoop itself (not the best angle- it really does look cool!)

that looks pretty tight...do you notice any difference at night or during the day with the headlights up or down?

Rain... If you went with the real deal - the HemiCuda shaker. That had a linkage on the scoop that allowed you to open, or close the scoop. I have seen the scoop linkage hooked up to a "choke" cable inside the car, and hooked to the throttle so that the butterflies would open as you pusher the petal.

If you went with that setup, you could prevent MOST of the rain from getting into your engine. Some rain won't hurt things, but a rain storm at 30mph would screw some **** up.

What I would do is rig another "butterfly" on the back of the scoop that would open when the front was closed, and close when the front was open. That way you could still get fresh air into your engine and not have to worry about all the water (except at idle, don't know how to fix that...).

But I agree, it would be kinda sweet.

may be a little inconvinient, but a lexan plate cut to the exact size of the opening with some sort of pin to hold it in, that would work as a plate to cover it when raining

Bambam7 i love that it looks great and looks like it would work good too. i have been thinkin of doing that but the rain thing is the only thing that is stoping me, but i have a freind that has a GSR and as a air bypass valve that you can get for the cold air intakes. i was thinking could that be used. its to direct the water from geting sucked into the motor. my freinds got is intake coming out in the finder wells right infront of the tire and he drive in the rain and everything and never has any problems. so if that could be used i and going to pay the 45.00 and go bye one
tell me what you guys think.

i could make a flap that would have a pull mechanism similar to the hood latch and trunk latch that you could pull down if it started to rain. you would prolly need to put it back up manually, but that is no big deal. if you are driving in the rain you dont really need ram air anyways. i will look at solving this and come up with some diagrams

Justin

PS. sorry about being an *** at the beginning

no you can buy just teh air bypass valve. they come in like 3 sizes...2.5".2.75".3.0". and there 49.95 in the jc whitney. but i have a good freind that owns a PF shop and he said he could get me one for like 29.00
so i think im going to buy one tomarrow and see. they say you can pour water on the filter and it will run as if nothing happend. but i dont know. ill let you guy know in a couple days how it works.

you could push your filter up further and have the scoop physically behind it. that way no water would ever get in the filter. you do needa drain hole though

There is somebody on the forum that did this a little different. He had his air filter set back by the firewall, above the cold start fluid resevoir. Then had a vent back there. That way the headlight couldn't get in the way.

Bam Bam7, i acutally think the abs GTS one looks great... i don't see why everyone is going with carbon fibre... the stupid crap isn't even functional anyways...

the point of carbon fibre is to replace the use of Al and Steel for the chassis and body pannel to add regidity and strength with a material that is stronger and much lighter.

Carbon Fiber simply looks good and that type of intake is functional. The NACA type of duct has been used for years on many types of racecars and airplanes. It allows the boundary layer of air to flow in with out disturbing the aerodynamics much. Important on airplanes and fast racecars but not as important on street driven cars but still nice looking and functional.
