The lights don't work, the ohmmeter does.
Just make sure the car is fully warm first so that the cold start thermowax/cam assembly is not holding open the throttle.

Actually, I use both. My primary method is by resistance. I set to 1K Ohm engine fully warmed up. Then I hook the twin lights up to see if I get a 1 light on condition. If I do, all is well. If I don't then I adjust until I do. Typically, the resistance is something different from 1 K Ohm but usually close. Then I always short the initial set connector (ground it if you're a S5) and adjust idle.
