Setting Timing on New Rebuild-High Idle
Have a fresh rebuild in an 88TII. Engine actually started the very first time we tried. Total running time is still measured in minutes. We currently have the idle set high to help keep it running till the engine breaks in. Timing marks were lined up and the CAS was stabbed.
I suspect the timing is still pretty far off;
Since we cannot use factory procedure (idle below 1000, initial set connector grounded, timing light etc).,
How can we get the timing closer to spec?
thanks,
-J

What I would do, would be to just leave the timing where it's at. Run that thing at idle for 2 hours, just sitting there. Pay attention for leaks/creeping temps/oilpressure, etc.
Assuming it's a stock ECU, it WILL kick into advanced timing above 1k rpm, so you're right there. Once it's run long enough to idle down a bit, then set your timing.

i think the lowest rpm on the timing map is 1068rpm, so if its at zero throttle, and under 1068rpm, timing should be on the marks.
the other way to do it is spin the engine to the marks, with the key off. pop the little plastic rivet/cover out of the CAS cover. if the big CAS tooth is right in the center of the hole in the CAS cover, timing is close enough.
