Serpentine Belts on FC???

Anyone make a serpentine pully kit for the T2?
If not, does anyone know of a company that will custom built pullies?

Thanks,
Mike

A couple places in Japan do, including one that is a toothed cog belt.

However, they are all insanely expensive! Atkins would be better, but if you want info, let me know and I'll post it for you.

Thanks for the info guys. I knew Atkins made one, I forgot about it.

That toothed coged belt would be kick ***. I prbably wouldn't want to spend that much money though.

The Atkins kit costs a fortune ($300) and the MazdaRacing belts ($250) are sold by MazdaRacing who, from what I have read don't do anything other then take your money and not send you the product. Both belt kits lack a power steering pully.

What of putting FD pullies on? Would that work?

I'm sure I can pop some form of spacer on them. It is worth a shot to me. I think I'll try it, I just need to get a hold of some FD pullies :-p

FD's also use 2 seperate serpentine belts, if i am remembering right. one for alt, water pump and airpump, and one for p/s and a/c.

^ Sounds about correct. A lot of decent cars w/ Serpentine belts dont have A/C on the same line as the waterpump, in case the A/C locks up.

Related Story: An interesting car in the garage I work at, and the story behind it; A woman was driving her Pontiac Grand Am home from a road trip when the A/C compressor locks. This squeels like crazy, so she drives it to a random gas station and asks the mechanic. He just says 'cut the belt.' Now, this would work on our cars, but on her car, the serpintine belt goes around EVERYTHING. Waterpump, Supercharger, everything. She drove it home. The car is toast.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

I took a look at the way the FC has it's pullies set up, and I belive modifying the P/S A/C spacer to move the P/S and A/C backwards some (About an inch and a half or so, I'll mesure later) would be the way to get this working.

There is really no reason to go serpentine with the A/C and PS pump. It's a waste.

The reason Atkins makes the serpentine kit for the main pulley-waterpump-alternator is for those who choose to remove the Air Pump. Removal of the airpump causes the single remaining belt to slip on the waterpump pulley. To avoid this, people use 2 V-belts on the alternator. The serpentine kit is just an alternative to using two V-belts.

So you are saying that the Atkins kit still has a v-belt pully on it for the P/S? Hrm.

They still dont have idler arms on eaither one. :o

You are correct. With any of the serpentine kits on the market, you still use the V-Belt for the AC and PS.

There is no need for an auto-adjusting idler in the kit because you set the tenstion with the Alternator just like stock.

You can use the FD pullies easily, however you will need to change the entire water pump and housing assembly. The FD pullies are designed to spin the water pump in reverse compared to the FC water pumps.

Very interesting! Some good info there

So, how about making the belt run a different direction, using a smaller belt, and eliminating the idler pully?

What water pump would work? Would the FD one bolt on?

If you put FD pullies on your car, along with the FD waterpump, you can use the FD belt.

I'm confused.

I've got the Mazdaracing pullies. Thank god I didn't have to pay for them! The main pulley is WAY too small. This is taking the underdrive concept a little too far as the water pump now turns slower than the engine. The MR pullies use a 6 rib belt. I decided that I didn't want to use this pathetically tiny main pulley so a 3rd gen main was probably the best choice. I acquired one of these fairly easily. It is meant for a 5 rib belt and not a 6 rib. The 3rd gen has 2 belts, a 5 rib and a 6 rib. Unfortunately the pulley I needed was the 5. This really isn't that big of a deal since the spacing between ribs is still the same and the 5 on the main pulley line up with 5 of the ribs on the others. Just use a 5 rib belt. No problem. The main pulley does have to go on the 2nd gen backwards though as the 3rd gens space them out farther. This means redrilling 2 of the mounting holes. This is really a minor issue. Then you just use the stock outer pully or pullies with their V belts. The Mazdaracing main pulley has no mounting holes to add the outer pullies to nor is it large enough in diameter to drill them.

I have only just figured out how to make it all work. It is not currently running on my car since I have a 1st gen. The water pump on the 2nd gen is deeper than mine so the MR water pump pulley doesn't fit. I do have the 2nd gen water pump which will let me adapt it quite easily but I've just installed the standalone ecu and haven't been concerned with the changeover yet. It should be pretty easy.
