Serious defrosting issues!

Okay, so I took the FC out to see my girlfriend for the first time since we bought the car--she's waited eight months to see it! So we say goodbye and I am heading out to Chicago while she heads off to work, and after watching her go down the road through my driver's window, I look forward and I *can't see anything*. We had some major major storms this morning when I left but seriously, this was ridiculous. I fiddled with as many different flow and temprature settings as I could, and after everything, I could only get a quarter of the driver's windshield defrosted. This really sucked for a 100 mile drive in the rain! Anyone fixed this problem yet?

is air coming out of the defroster vents on the top of the dash when you have the logicon climate control in either the foot or defrost?

Is the outside air on?

You know having the air condition switched on (with the temp set to warm) also helps?

Does it blow strongly? My brother's car had a messed up Logicon that wouldn't let the fan blow at full speed. It sucked at defrosting too.

Yeah. The Logicon seems to be controlling everything just right. The flow is strong, and nothign goes where it shouldn't when the buttons tell something to go one place and not another. The airconditioner was taken out... I dunno if what you're saying would work now or not.

Same, stock windshield. It's also very dirty. I saw these traces on it when it was heavily fogged, as if there were some residue. I've tried just about everything to clean the windshield since I got it, but I hadn't put it together that whatever is *on* the window could cause a bigger problem

Well for best defrosting you would want air conditioning on, but since you don't have air you just lost 50% efficency.

I might double check the air mix motor and make sure it is going all the way over.

Hmm. Yeah, I didn't have much control over the air conditioner business. It sucks (it's hot here), I know.

I'll check the motor.

Any suggestions that wouldn't have to do with the exact functionality of the unit? Like... sprays, long term fixes. Modifications?

If it is leaking slightly it will be a pain to defrost. I found this out with my old Ford truck.

It seems, that for all my success with this car, I will ultimately be held up by defrosting issues

It'll be thirty one day and ninety another day. But yes, it's a problem. Eventually, it got on the driver's and passenger's windows, too

Oh yeah, and you know that defrosting wires that ascend the windshield? I didn't see any defrosting patterns going on there, whereas I did in the back hatch with those wires.

i don't think those are defrosting wires. I think they are the AM antennas. Some correct me if i'm wrong.

Yeah they are just secondary antennas. Look on some 70s and 80s GM cars and you will see the same thing.

Sounds to me like the problem I had in my 280Z. My window seemed to have a film on the inside of the window and for the life of me I could not get it to defog. I found out that it was a bad heater core that was mixing anti-freeze and water into the heat blowing from my window defoggers. This stuff wouldn't just defog nor could you just wipe it off. What I ended up doing was replacing the heater Core and the A/C. Fixed the problem Could be whats happening to you. If you need to get it off the windows I recommend something that cuts through the Glycol. Try maybe windex/glass plus and some paper towels.

Man! I was hoping it wasn't a antifreeze leak but I had heard that before, oh man, ergh. Heater cores aren't cheap, are they? Erf

How can I test to see if there's antifreeze on the windshield? It doesn't smell like antifreeze...

hehehe I'll vouch for this one, took me like 2 weeks of "sorta" working on it to finish. I had to take half my dash apart....blech

Well if theres a greasy (dunno if thats the right word for it) substance on the window, then I'd bet it's a heater core leak. Your problem sounds exactly like mine was when I described it to people.

Try it on a second generation F-body. Have to pull the passenger fender, inner fender, and dashboard. Sucks ***.
