series 4 weight differences?

was bored n' looking through the spec sheet since im' in the market to get an fc and i noticed that the 86' sport and the 87' sport seem to have a drastic difference in weight?

i was wondering if any1 knew why. the only difference i think* i found was a lack of power steering for the 86? not even 90% sure about this.

i believe the weights are 2625 vs 2700?

oh and i was wondering if any1 knew the actual weight to the 89-90 GTUs. the spec sheet says 2802, but other places have it listed as 2725?

hope im not bothering any1 about my stupid questions.

thanks!

Im not sure about the 89-90. The 88 however, is listed as 2800. I would assume since they kept most of the equipment, and changed a few things (brakes got different calipers, and a few other small items) that it could be off a little bit. I know for a fact that my 88 GTU does not weigh 2800 though, seeing that its completely gutted, save a driver seat, seat belt, and a steering column. I should go to a truck scale and have it weighed though, and see how much i actually removed.

im guessing those weights i posted were base model sport editions with no optional equipment?

seeing as to how the 86 and 87 seemed to have the same optional equiptment, i was curious where the 75lb difference came from.

this is ofcourse assuming the 86 and 87 both come with power steering not as an option.

sorry if that sounds confusing.

The sport editions came with 5 lugs.

My 86 sport has no sunroof, A/C, PS, power windows, TII 4pot brakes, functional aero kit.

My '86 sport has the aero kit, A/C, no sunroof, no power steering, manual windows, 5lug w/ 4 pot brakes, aluminum hood.
If I remember correctly the swaybars are actually a step above the GXL's, but dont quote me on that.

(Now has vented rear rotors, turbo ii engine, tii tranny, & tii rear end + some misc goodies. = )

I had the weights of my brothers '87 GXL (front and back + total), compared to my Sport's weights: and my car is about 150+ pounds lighter acording to that scale, but as its designed for semi's, its kinda hard to say how accurate it is.

The sport had some lighter components that others didn't such as thin carpeting.

Here's mine, I have yet to fix the damage to the rear qtr panel, but it drives well!

I got the car without the spoiler, so that's my loss...

Come to think of it, the seats may be lighter as they have no headrest, and are very basic w/ no adjustable lumbar support, or anything fancy like that.

+ aluminum hood, perhaps thinner carpet (not sure about that one though). The hood makes the largest difference by far.

Well the hood would shave off 30 Pounds. And throw another say,30-40 for the Power steering Pump, bracket,Etc.Give the carpeting 5 pounds...There ya Go(75 pounds)..But I'm just Guessing.

In reference to the LSD: Not from the factory.. ( Thank god I have all the guts from a Tii)

I think the hood was only worth 20-25 pounds. Also, not all sports had an aluminum hood. I think it was pretty much a crap shoot as to what the hood was made of.

s5tiifc3s, you forgot about the lack of a sunroof on the sport models. Not sure about the weight of the assembly, but I'd guess around 12-16 pounds.

the lightest of all was the '86 BASE because it had no options and had the wimpy teeny weeny 4 lug thin rotor'd brakes. I think the '86's had some minor differences in the dash, interior and/or the bumper beams too maybe?

my '87 Sport weighs 2700 with a T2 rear end, S5 dash, full widebody and an LS1T56 in it
hahhaha, I havent even gone bonkers removing stuff yet!
gotta love the Sport models, hot damn.

LOT of mis-information in this thread.

All Sport models had the heavy duty suspension (that was later found on the S4 Turbo)
All Sport models had the 4 piston front brakes and vented rear rotors with 5 lug wheels
All Sport models did not have power windows or power mirrors. A factory power sunroof was optional.
All Sport models had the factory aero kit. This included spoilers in front of each wheel a rear spoiler and a underpanel around the engine and oil pan.

Now the changes.

For 87 the Sport got speed varible power steering (just like the S5 Turbo), and rear storage bins standard.
For 87.5 the Sport got GXL carpet, high impedence fuel injectors and seats from the Turbo.
For 88 the Sport got renamed the GTU and added a new body colored power mirrors, new rear spoiler to the aero kit and a limited slip differential.
For 89 the Sport/GTU got renamed the GTUs (note the small "s") and got the alum hood, and 4.3 rear end differntial and 17:1 speed varible power steering.

Here is a window sticker for the average 87 Sport, you can clearly see the weight listed is 2623 lbs:
