sending unit questions

I bought an 89 gtu it needs a sending unit and pump. The pump went bad so he "lost" every thing when he made some other sending unit "work". Is their any right sending unit the will work for the 89 looked on line and can't find an ome one. Thanks

Thread moved to Second Gen Specific. Any S5 (89-91) fuel level sender assembly will work in your car. As for a pump, there's plenty of options. Simplest would be a regular S5 pump, which you can usually find for cheap in the classifieds section. I'm using a FD fuel pump in my 20B FC on the stock S4 sender assembly

The benefit to a FD pump is higher flow, compared to a T2 one. Not meaning to sound rude, but it's been covered multiple times. It's a drop-in upgrade with no fuss.

Just remember by putting in a Higher output pump would mean that you have to control more flow,so be prepared for problems if you use just the stock fuel system setup(Fpr and pulsation dampener on the rails).
If you have an N/A and are going to stay N/A then just get an N/a pump.
The assembly that holds the pump on has a 'specific' connector for that series to connect to the harness,so IF you opt to use a s5 on an S4 it may not go well.
Besides the s5 tank is bigger..(not 100% sure if it is deeper.)

That's a good question Styx, regarding the dimensions of S4 vs S5 fuel tanks. I've not played around in the catalogs for a few months, but I do recall the sender part numbers being different. It would suggest the S5 tank is deeper.

The pump won't turn on when hooked up to the harness with just Key ON,unless you jumper the fuel check connector OR move the AFM(inside to think it is getting air).
another way is to turn the key to start, that will make the pump get voltage.

His S5 AFM doesn't have a fuel switch.
