second set of lights

I noticed that on alot of Video Games (GT4)/ and Anime(Initial D) that the second set of lights on the FC (the ones under the flip up head lights) are lit up at night.... mine dont light up, so are they supposed to?

I have a 88 gxl, and that spot never lights up, on all three light steps (off, 1, 2) on 1 the side lights and rear lights come on, but the front dosent do any thing, On 2 the flip lights open and the headlights come on... but the second lights dont ever do any thing...

So what I want to know is there a bulb in there? dose it need replaceing... or do i have bad wireing or something?

If not then what are they for?

yea, japanese rx7's had light up FTP's while we just had a clear one.

or are you talking about the foglights at the bottom of the bumper?

either way, they can be purchased from some site or other member.

S5s have the foglights.

FTP lenses (flash to pass) are so when you flick your brights at someone, without your headlights up, they see you flashing your lights. You're supposed to flash them when you pass someone, so they know, and can accomodate, but really, they are just there to signal when you pass a speed trap.

They work by taking the light from your non popped up headlights and directing the light out. There is a write-up on AaronCake's site.

No, they are just lenses. Your headlights shine through them. To turn them on by flipping your brights, just like in a normal car, when you flash your lights. You can't see it when you are in the car, unless you set up a switch like I did, so you can have running lights without having your headlights up.

Maybe you noticed, those lights aren't very bright when down..the FTP lenses dull them down.

Brights don't stay on unless headlights are on. AaronCake's write up turns the headlights on without popping them up.

Actually the steering wheel is on the driver’s side...

Because they still have a sharply focused horizontal beam of light that will distract and annoy oncoming drivers. The light output is restricted but they’re just as bright to look at.

You must be easily impressed... Personally 5W bulbs don’t do that much for me, especially at that crazy price.

These are nothing more than front marker lights, no different in performance to the combined indicator/marker lights fitted to US models. For obvious reasons, video games and cartoons should not be used to get an idea of what they look like in real life, which is nothing special. Even photos of the real thing tend to make them look brighter than they really are due to the longer exposure times of night photography.

No, they're just 5W marker lights like I said. They’re no brighter than the marker lights you already have. Where do these myths come from?

They take a small wedge bulb (194, same as the side markers). I doubt you’ll find anything bigger than 10W, so you'd need to use bigger bulb holders, which would require hacking up the housing to fit. If you’re going to do that you might as well save yourself a bunch of money and hack up the FTP lenses you already have. Even better again would be to follow Aaron Cake’s DRL write-up. It's cheaper again, will look better, is completely reversible and you won't lose the ability to use the FTP lenses as they were intended.

Not sure if it's been said clearly, but us American guys CAN use our FTP's.

If you're sitting in the driver's seat, just pull on the LEFT-hand 'blinker stalk thingy' that you would PULL if your headlights were ON, to turn on the brights... Make sense? Just pull towards you and 'turn' on your brights when the headlights are down. The little blue "brights are ON" symbol will light up on your gauge-cluster, and your FTP's will be blingin'!

Too bad as soon as you release the 'stalk', the FTP's will turn off. If you want to be cool, you can 'wedge' something behind the 'stalk' so they're always on, lol.

Pics from Inital D for reference.

Edit: Added "Chart" with what I believe the different lights are called. (Please correct if wrong.)

I see what you all mean about the brights switch when the lights are down... to bad it pops out of it its self if the headlights arnt up

Maybe if i go to 'home depo' and get me some of thoes bulbs and sockets I can do the wire up my self --shouldn't cost more then $20

Well, guys I got a question about the flash to pass lights. Before I replaced my headlight switch cluster I could turn mine on without them coming up, and could actually use them as driving lights/city lights? Does anyone know how to do this on a working switch because I really liked having them down and on, it looks sweet. Although not much light actually hits the ground, might be dangerous on dark roads but cops can't tell the difference when they're coming at them.... It looks cool, maybe I can mod the switch to make that happen?

Only an idiot drive would around at night with the headlights down. The cops should be the least of your worries. I'd consider not clearly seeing where you're going a little more important. This is for daytime use only.
