Second Gen 1989 RX-7

Hi, not sure what exactly to do here but here I go...

I have been recently inhierted a second generation GXL 1989 RX-7, she's been sitting in our garage for about two years now. I need some advice on how to keep her up and running. I'm not too familiar with rotarys except for the fact that their oil needs to be changed every 3 or 4,000 miles. And the engine seems to be in very good condition.

And advice on getting her back to working order? Thanks in advace.

Just about every car on the road today has a 3-5k mile oil change interval recommended by the maker.

Go to the FAQ and other "stickied" threads at the top of this section to find out alot about the cars. Also go to howstuffworks.com and type in "wankel" to the search to find a basic guide to the mechanical workings of the rotary.

Drain and change the gas, Buy new plugs and wires, replace air filter, fuel filter and install them(try to do it yourself) pull the EGI 30A fuse from the engine bay and go crank your car for 5-10 seconds(car will not start) ( search for: Flooded ) THEN replace the fuse and see if she'll start...........change all her fluids(engine oil, radiator, tranny and rear end, replace hoses that are hard or brittle, check vaccuum lines............all I can think of for now....more ppl will chime in.....HOPEFULLY not repeating the same cra.....that would be postwhoring.

I was just giving general "find out about the car you now have" advice. Its troubling that the FAQ doesn't have maintenance links!

If you do a search for my name and "storage" you should find several sets of detailed instructions on how to store and resurrect an RX-7.

Are you planning on doing the work yourself? You'll need a basic set of METRIC tools (wrenches, sockets, etc..) with sizes 8mm - 24mm.

The factory service manual pretty much walks you through the basics on maintenance and tuneup procedures, all of which should be performed if the car has not ran in a while, or has been sitting for a long time. Download that here:
http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory...ual/1989_1991/

All of the fluids (oil, transmission, diff, brake, coolant), plug wires, spark plugs, radiator hoses, misc hozes, belts, etc.. should be at autozone, advance auto parts, NAPA, NOPI, or similar autoparts store. You may need to call ahead to those stores as not everyone stocks NKG spark plugs.

Besides basic maintenance, you may need to replace the rediator cap if the rubber seal it rotten. Same thing with the drainplug gasket.

Once you've done the basic tuneup, replaced all fluids, hoses, & belts, and everything else involved with the tuneup, don't forget to check that the TPS (throttle position sensor) is in adjustment (use the voltage test). Also check the car idles nicely at 750 rpms and doesn't die with the air conditioner on.

You said that the engine seems to be in very good working order.. are we to assume that it runs right now, and that you've started it at least a few times in the past two years? We need a bit more info, like if you're having a specific problem.

The above are all great maintenance tips, and Aaron's storage and revival thread is great for bringing a car back from hibernation... but we don't know which applies to you

Welcome to the club, BTW.

Now I haven't started the engine, it hasn't been started for at least two years. But when me and my friend popped the hood, everything was clean and looked to be in general good working conditions.

The only thing that I can seriously identify that may cause a problem is the wastegate. It looks rusted over and breached in a few places with a hole or two. That bothers me a lot.
