Seat belt recall help
I own a 91 RX7. I bought it with a salvaged title. I need to flatbed it to an inspection facility. My automatic seat belts do not move at all. Drivers is stuck in the door open position. Passenger's is stuck in the door closed position. Seat belt warning light is eternally on when car is running. If I connect the belts to the automatic belt buckles, I get chimes up the *** forever until I disconnect them. I have read about the seat belt recall, but I can't drive the car to a dealership to have them recall the belts until I go through inspection and get it registered. I can't go through inspection and get it registered until I have my seat belts fixed. Can I get the recall parts for free and do it myself? Anyone have experience with the seat belt recalls?

They will not give you the belts for you to install on your own. And most dealerships will give you a lot of hell trying to do the seatbelt recall since its on a 20 year old car. They will try and tell you that the recall ended around 93. As long as you have the recall paper in hand, you shouldn't have any trouble with the dealership.

That sucks they check your seatbelts for registration. I thought Cali had crap laws. I would say tow it to the dealership is gonna be your only hope. Or you could just buy some Manual belts and end the whole problem forever because they WILL break again. I had 3 replaced in my old N/A 2 driver and 1 passenger.

if mazda knows its salvaged the recalls and warrantied become void. i would call mazda's 800 number to see if the recall would still apply.

You don't need to print anything out, just tell them you will call the mazda headquarters and give them the phone number to the dealership. If they still wont cooperate then actually call the mazda headquarters, they'll have someone call right away and bitch them out .

Thank you j9fd3s.
Now can the 86-88 manual belts be fitted on a 89+?
I'm assuming the lap and shoulder belts are together, not separate like the auto belts. And the manual belts originate up by your shoulder, not down by the center console. Is this swap possible?

The manual belt retractor reel and the autobelt motor share the same location and bolt pattern (the manual belt does not "originate up by your shoulder", it simply has a pivot point there and even the autobelt chassis still has that mount in place).
PM me for more details.

To do the complete manual belt conversion and have it look good, you need to get the wider S4 headliner, the S4 A- and B-pillar trim, etc. If you search "manual belt conversion" I'm sure you'll find some threads detailing all the parts you need. If you want the parts to be black, you might look for a Canadian S5 car because they didn't have the automatic mouse belts. Or you could dye/paint S4 parts to match.
...unless you have a blue interior. If the car in your avatar photo is your car, you might at that. Then you can find what you need in S4 parts.

The S5 a-pillar mounts (primarily) to the mousetrack-which has been removed.
Under the mousetrack the chassis lacks the mount points required by the S4 trim.
As for the b-pillar...
The S5 b-panels sit further off the sheetmetal to create the depth required by the belt motor. As a result, the mount points are about an inch taller than those on the S4 chassis. Even assuming the mount points are identically located- and I'm not sure they are- the S4 panel would sit proud of the body.
When I did my belt conversion I prepared by purchasing a and b pillar trim from a S4, thinking I was being smart, only to discover that the panels would not work.
Still have the a-pillar trim (black) if anyone needs it.

Interesting. So how did you end up finishing your interior? Did you just leave the old mouse tracks in so the the S5 A-pillar trim would have something to attach to? I apologize for hijacking this thread; if you have some pictures in another thread somewhere, could you PM me a link?
My interest in this subject is mostly academic at this point because I sold my old S5. I always dreamed of ridding it of those horrible motorized belts though. Mine worked fine after both sides were replaced by Mazda under warranty, but it seemed like I was always ducking to avoid being strangled by them at some point.

The S4 a / b-pillar panels will NOT fit into a S5.
The S5 a-pillar mounts (primarily) to the mousetrack-which has been removed.

the bins and rear carpet are a little different too, so the s5 b pillar trim might be better to keep

I really don't care if my interior is gutted, as long as I have functional seat belts for inspection. Last time I checked, A and B pillar trim is not required to pass inspection. And to be honest, I'm probably going to remove the manual belts after I pass inspection, so everything fits and looks stock. I never have and never will wear a seat belt. Seat belts are for people that don't know how to drive.
My interior is black, not blue.

I have a feeling I can get my autobelts to work. It seems to be an electrical problem.
Is there suppost to be 12V at that red wire where the factory put a little access door to test?
There is a connector with a thick blue, thick yellow wire, thin black/blue stripe, and thin black. Where should power be coming from?
