sagging oil pressure gauge

hello all,

On my 88 rx-7, the oil pressure gauge sags, it hangs down below the horizontal mark that corresponds to zero, it sags down maybe 1/4" inch so it looks like its at minus 20. This happens with the ENGINE OFF, and ignition off, car at rest, etc.

When I drive the gauge moves up as normal, however it reads lower because of the sagging.

I know the gauge is defective , however Im wondering if anyone else out there has run into this and knows if there is an easy fix ?

can the gauge be removed and repaired, or does it need a new gauge ?

I was kinda hoping I could just tap the needle and wall-ah , haha maybe not..

I've run into it, but haven't found an easy fix.

The best thing to do is factor these together:

1: The stock gauge sucks...when the needle ISN'T broken haha
2: There are more accurate/reliable gauges and sending units out there for quite cheap
3: The stock gauge sucks

Then its easy to see what needs to be done

But, really, the stock gauge DOES work ok...but I would presonally rather trust a gauge and sender produced and packaged 20 years AFTER my car was made to monitor my oh so vital engine oil pressure.

what are good aftermarket gagues? I have the same dilema and also posted something about this earlier. is it the sender unit that messed up or the gague is just burnt out

Linky to good aftermarket sending units

EDIT: Oil Pressure Sender from Mazdatrix, not bad, is this the problem? I didnt ground the car right when installing my tranny, and thats when the gauge went into the negative region.

It can happen when the gauge overheats frm a bad sending unit. I just replaced mine because of this. The bi-metal strip overheats and turns blue, permenantly arcing it. You can open the cluster and readjust the needle but the accuracy of the gauge is shot once it has been overheated.

yeah i think i did this when i didn ground the car properly when i swapped tranny's. So i burnt it out. Why didnt all the other gagues burnt out just the OIL Pressure..
