This saddens me and pisses me off! Which should I be?

Okay, thursday afternoon I got done with my oil pan, putting rtv and a gasket on, after a full day, which was yesterday afternoon, I drove around went to work and drove around again, as I was leaving work, I saw a couple of drips on the ground, but I didn't think much of it, then this morning as I was driving to Nike my car started smoking again like it didn't have any oil..... I checked the oil level and sure enough it was damn near empty, now why would it still be leaking, even though I cleaned the surfaces well, didn't have anything on them, and applied the the rtv with the gasket it in between? Now as I was tightening one of the bolts, it broke, but it doesn't seem to be leaking out of the bolt area, Or as from what i was seeing as i turned off the engine. Another question how would I come about taking off the oil pan, with the bold broken? and What should I do about the leak? New gasket? With or without rtv? Or just rtv?

How did you tighten them?
Did you torque each one the same?

If you just went at them one after the other 12345 and not 137248 etc.
and didnt torgue them you may have warped the pan and it may not
have sealed good. Just a thought......

hey man this sorta stuff happens, if the surface was clean and the two surfaces sat well together i dont really know what to say. you said you tightened up the bolts good except the one that broke and it didnt leak around the broken one? are you shure it is leaking from the pan?
i have one many occasions only used a liquid gasket maker on rear ends of semi trucks and my diffs dont leak out of that seal ever. i would make shure you are leaking out of the pan first before you try anything else, and go over your work again. get a friend how is not dumb or drunk to go over your work after you have and then start all over again and try to fix the leak from were ever it is coming from.

check around your OMP and check the oil cooler fittings for leaks.

If you are going through that much oil, it is NOT the pan that is leaking. As mentioned, check the metering oil pump (they like to leak around the shaft), check the oil cooler lines and make sure that the oil filter area is not leaking like crazy.

Did you follow the instructions for the RTV...Some RTVS require curing before putting full torque on the bolts. This is why I only use Rightstuff by Permatex. It is an anerobic RTV and full torque and oil can be put in 10-15 minutes after application.

Thanks Aaron! And yes the oil pan broke, I was not applying anytype of strenuous pressure on the bolts i was tightening it and was not putting to much strenuous pressure on it, and it broke. Yeah I let the RTV cure for a day.

I woulndt use RTV on oil . Doesnt seem to work out well. Ultrablack or Gray may work, but your best bet is to use brake cleaner to clean to get all oil residue off and make sure the pan is flat.

Actually 7-10 ft-LBs if you are talking about the M6 bolts that hold the pan on.
